Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy has publicly challenged allegations regarding so-called hateful comments directed at Angel Reese during the Chicago Sky’s recent game against the Indiana Fever. The controversial remarks allegedly took place during Saturday’s matchup, prompting the WNBA to announce an investigation on Sunday.
The league, which has made it clear that it stands against racism, hate, and discrimination, stated that it aims to ensure all players feel safe on and off the court. However, no specific details about the purported comments have surfaced, raising questions about their authenticity.
Portnoy, who attended the game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse and was spotted wearing a Caitlin Clark jersey, expressed skepticism regarding the allegations. He speculated that internet trolls may have fabricated the situation. In a video shared on his X account, he stated that the only hostility evident during the game came from Reese after an aggressive foul by Clark in the third quarter. Portnoy claimed that Reese made her displeasure known very clearly.
During the game, Clark was assessed a flagrant foul, although she claimed there was no malicious intent underlying her actions. Portnoy remarked, “I was at the game. If someone was being racist or saying terrible things, they should absolutely be removed. I would be stunned beyond belief if that occurred. The crowd at this venue was composed of families and young girls. Yes, we expressed our frustration when Angel Reese confronted Caitlin Clark, but that is part of sports.”
He further dissected the WNBA’s response, stating that it seemed disproportionate to the actual events that unfolded. He noted that unless something egregious happened without anyone present noticing, he doubts the veracity of the claims. Portnoy criticized the league for acknowledging the investigation, suggesting it lends credence to false narratives based on an internet rumor.
Portnoy stated, “You have a choice: to paint Indiana Fever fans as the villains for a baseless internet rumor or to acknowledge the reality of the situation on the court. There is not a shred of evidence supporting these claims, yet the league continues to pursue an investigation.”
In defense of the game atmosphere, Portnoy asserted that Angel Reese’s actions were deserving of boos but emphasized that the league’s response was unfounded.
“Reese’s aggressive play warranted a reaction from the crowd,” he explained. “Outside of that context, the WNBA needs to understand its audience. They have an incredible player in Caitlin Clark, and that raises the league’s profile. However, the league risks alienating fans by giving in to baseless accusations.”
Portnoy challenged the league and the Indiana Fever’s commitment to addressing hate speech. He remarked, “If you can find even a single individual offering hate during that game, I will gladly eat my words. I was there, and I can assure you that there was no such behavior. The only animosity shown was from Angel Reese’s reaction to Clark.”
The Women’s National Basketball Players Association, or WNBPA, has also weighed in on the situation, stressing the need for an investigation. They released a statement affirming their disapproval of hate speech, stating, “The WNBPA supports the WNBA’s investigation into reports of hateful comments at yesterday’s game in Indianapolis. Such behavior is unacceptable in our sport.”
The association is placing its trust in the league to conduct a thorough investigation under its “No Space for Hate” policy, emphasizing its commitment to fostering an inclusive environment for all players.
Both the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky acknowledged the ongoing investigation. Adam Fox, CEO of the Sky, reiterated, “We are committed to protecting our players and commend the league for taking meaningful action to ensure a secure environment for all WNBA players.”
As the season progresses, both teams anticipate four additional matchups. Fans and players alike will be watching closely to see how the league handles this contentious issue going forward.
