Dave Portnoy Launches Scathing Critique of Gavin Newsom Following Podcast Announcement

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy has unleashed a fierce attack on California Governor Gavin Newsom, labeling him as ‘trash’ and a self-serving politician. Portnoy’s remarks came on the heels of Newsom’s announcement regarding a new podcast dedicated to engaging in what he describes as real conversations.

In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Portnoy did not hold back. He stated, ‘He’s trash, like I hate him,’ referring to Newsom, whom he characterized as everything that embodies a slick politician. Portnoy added, ‘You take a cold shower after you talk with them.’

Newsom’s Podcast Announcement Stirs Controversy

Newsom sparked conversation on social media this week after unveiling plans for a podcast aimed at having frank discussions with individuals whom he both admires and disagrees with. ‘We need to change the conversation. And that’s why I’m launching a new podcast,’ Newsom declared in a video shared across platforms. ‘This is going to be anything but the ordinary politician podcast. I’m going to be talking to people directly that I disagree with, as well as people I look up to, but more importantly, I’ll be talking directly with you, the listener. Real conversations.’

First Impressions and Rising Criticism

The California governor, who previously co-hosts the ‘Politickin’’ podcast with former NFL player Marshawn Lynch and sports agent Doug Hendrickson, will produce the new show in partnership with iHeartMedia. Portnoy revealed that he had turned down an invitation to appear on Newsom’s existing podcast, stating, ‘They asked me to go on. I said, ‘No,’ because I just don’t like the guy so much.’

Portnoy’s disdain for Newsom grew during the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially unfamiliar with the governor, Portnoy quickly became a critic as he observed Newsom’s management of California during the crisis.

The Hypocrisy of Leadership

Portnoy cited Newsom’s controversial dinner party at the French Laundry restaurant in November 2020 as a pivotal moment that fueled his criticism. At the time, California was enforcing some of the strictest lockdown measures in the United States. Portnoy expressed outrage, saying, ‘California had the strictest lockdowns just about in the entire country. Then you see this and it just drives me crazy, those type of ‘rules for thee, not for me.’ This sentiment of hypocrisy, he argues, encapsulates the failures of politicians.

Rallying Support for Small Businesses

In contrast to Newsom’s leadership style, Portnoy has been actively involved in philanthropy. Through the Barstool Fund, he has raised over $40 million to assist struggling small businesses impacted by the pandemic. Portnoy’s efforts garnered support from a roster of celebrities, including Tom Brady, Guy Fieri, and Kid Rock.

Public Apologies and Accountability

Amid ongoing scrutiny, Newsom has publicly acknowledged his actions, referring to his attendance at the upscale restaurant as a ‘terrible mistake.’ Despite his apologies, critics, including Portnoy, remain unconvinced of his genuine commitment to governing effectively.

Accusations of Political Ambition

In his critique, Portnoy also accused Newsom of focusing on his presidential aspirations while California struggles with significant challenges. He remarked, ‘The state’s falling apart, but you’re in China like basically campaigning already to be president. So I really don’t care for him.’

This sentiment reflects a growing dissatisfaction with Newsom’s perceived priorities during a time of crisis in his state.

A Social Media Backlash

In response to Newsom’s podcast announcement, Portnoy joined the chorus of critics mocking the governor on social media. His posts, filled with biting questions, challenged Newsom’s integrity and priorities. ‘Let’s start with why did you throw a party for yourself at the French Laundry with no masks on in the middle of Covid?’ Portnoy queried on X, amplifying the public’s discontent.

Furthermore, Portnoy referenced a viral moment from 2023, where Newsom was shown playing basketball in China. He humorously questioned Newsom’s presence abroad while crucial issues in California remained unresolved.

Continued Outspoken Criticism

Portnoy’s vocal disdain for Newsom didn’t wane in recent interviews. Speaking with Fox Business host Stuart Varney, he reiterated his thoughts, stating, ‘This guy spends more time with podcasts or going to China or press tours than actually governing the state of California which is falling apart. I have really hated this guy since Covid.’

Future Implications and Ongoing Discontent

As Portnoy’s criticisms reverberate through social media, it brings into focus the larger conversation about accountability among elected officials. His aggressive stance against Newsom is reflective of broader public frustration with leadership during a time of crisis.

While Newsom embarks on his podcasting journey, many will be watching closely, eager to see if he can truly pivot the conversation or if accusations of hypocrisy and neglect will overshadow his efforts.
