Dave Roberts is no stranger to managing elite MLB players. After leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a World Series title, he prepares for the next big stage as he takes the reins for the 2025 MLB All-Star Game, an event that celebrates the cream of the crop in baseball.
Roberts has previously managed the National League All-Stars during the Midsummer Classic three times: in 2018, 2019, and 2021. Each experience has shaped his approach, allowing him to navigate this unique event with confidence.
With the upcoming fourth time at the helm, Roberts has transitioned from viewing this role as a challenge to embracing the joys that come with it. He expressed, “Now that there’s no extra innings, there’s no challenge for me. It’s easy; my coaches are managing the pitching … I’m enjoying the conversations … hanging out with the players and coaches. It’s great because we’re hanging out with the game’s best. Everyone’s having a good time, and they are not as edgy as they would be for a game that matters.” He emphasizes the importance of appreciating the accomplishments that have brought them all together.
The Dodgers significantly enhanced their roster during the offseason, showcasing their commitment to winning. Notable additions include Japanese pitching sensation Roki Sasaki and two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell. Star pitcher Clayton Kershaw, known for his deep-rooted loyalty to the Dodgers, agreed to a new short-term deal, assuring fans that he remains a cornerstone of the team.
This year, five Dodgers players made the All-Star roster, including Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Will Smith, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Each of these players contributes immensely to the team’s success and brings a wealth of talent to the All-Star experience.
Freeman, in particular, finds himself back in Atlanta, where he once brought glory to the Braves. Roberts notes, “Freddie gets to sleep in his own bed,” highlighting the comfort of being back in a familiar environment for batting practice ahead of the home run derby. After leaving Atlanta following the Braves’ 2021 World Series championship, Freeman has flourished as a key player for the Dodgers, securing the 2024 World Series MVP honors.
Returning to Atlanta holds special significance for Freeman as he receives a warm welcome from the Braves’ fanbase. “Getting the welcome from the Braves faithful is going to be a lot of fun for Freddie,” Roberts adds, recognizing the emotional weight of this moment for his player.
While the All-Star festivities serve as a break, Roberts believes they offer invaluable benefits for all participants. He remarks, “This respite, this break is certainly going to be beneficial. But I do think that it’s going to be good for all the guys. I think Shohei (Ohtani) could probably do without all the attention. But the game needs Shohei; he’s just such a great advocate for the game. Yamamoto is going to be here, not pitching, which is great, while Will Smith will take a couple of at-bats as the starter, something I believe he has certainly earned.”
Roberts has dedicated a decade of his life to managing the Dodgers, a tenure marked by notable successes and deep connections with players. As the team approaches the All-Star break, they sit atop the National League West division, a testament to their hard work and determination.
The 2025 MLB All-Star Game offers fans an exhilarating showcase of talent, skill, and camaraderie. Scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET on FOX, fans are eager to witness some of the finest athletes in baseball come together for one unforgettable night. With Roberts at the helm, the All-Star Game promises to celebrate not just individual achievements but the joy of the sport itself.
