The latest statistics confirm a troubling trend for Las Vegas tourism, suggesting a shift in the preferences of younger generations. Recent data reveals that only 3.1 million visitors traveled to Las Vegas in June, marking an 11.3% decrease compared to the previous year, as reported by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
Discussions on social media highlight a growing discontent among potential visitors regarding the high costs associated with the Las Vegas experience. From expensive dining options to steep parking fees, many are opting to stay away from the city known for its entertainment.
Changing Trends in Gambling
Robby Starbuck, a conservative activist and host of “The Robby Starbuck Show,” pointed out to Fox News Digital that rising prices are not the only factor driving younger individuals away from Las Vegas. He noted a significant generational shift towards online gambling, stating that nearly everyone under the age of 40 tends to place bets online.
Starbuck remarked, “I don’t know one person under 40 who goes to Vegas regularly to bet or play slots. This trend will continue with younger people because our minds are wired differently.” The U.S. online gambling market was estimated to reach $12.68 billion in 2024, highlighting the appeal of convenience through digital platforms.
The Impact of Generational Differences
Starbuck emphasized that differences between generations might play a crucial role in the declining popularity of Las Vegas visits. While older generations valued in-person interactions, young people today often find satisfaction from online experiences.
He added, “The Vegas marketing image, centered around slots and showgirls, doesn’t resonate with young people. They have numerous options to gamble on their phones comfortably at home, diminishing the allure of traditional casinos.”
Changes in Alcohol Consumption
Another notable shift involves drinking habits among younger generations. Starbuck noted that many young people are choosing to drink less, which could adversely affect Las Vegas’ business model. According to National Drug Strategy Household survey data, the percentage of people in their 20s who abstained from alcohol more than doubled between 2001 and 2019, increasing from 9% to 22%.
A Gallup survey revealed that around 38% of adults under 35 now identify as fully abstaining from alcohol. Additionally, Civic Science found that more than 25% of Gen Z respondents expressed significant concern about the health effects associated with drinking.
Echoes of Change in the Hotel Industry
The hotel industry in Las Vegas is also suffering from reduced visitor numbers. Reports indicate that occupancy rates have dropped by 6.5%, while average daily room rates have decreased to $163.64, a decline of 6.6% as per LVCVA data.
This downturn has resulted in the postponement of a 43-story hotel and casino project on the Las Vegas strip, as reported by SF Gate. This prime location will continue to serve as an empty parking lot for the foreseeable future.

Starbuck, reflecting on his experiences in Las Vegas, expressed doubt about his future visits unless the city transforms itself into a more appealing destination. He stated, “If it feels like a place where I can envision a future and bring my whole family, then you’ll see me in Vegas again.”
