Karen Read’s defense team is intensifying efforts to undermine the credibility of a crash expert in a case that has attracted significant attention. The trial, which centers on the tragic death of Boston police officer John O’Keefe, is nearing its conclusion as defense attorneys highlight the exorbitant fees and alleged inconsistencies in the expert’s methodology.
Read faces serious charges, including the accusation of murdering her then-boyfriend O’Keefe. The prosecution alleges that she struck him with her Lexus SUV outside a house party located at 34 Fairview Road, leaving him to succumb to the elements in the early hours of January 29, 2022. As the prosecution draws closer to resting its case, the spotlight has turned to Dr. Judson Welcher, a crash reconstructionist from Aperture LLC, based in Texas.
Welcher firmly maintained his conclusion that Read’s vehicle collided with O’Keefe, testifying about the nature of the injuries he sustained. According to Welcher, O’Keefe’s injuries matched those typical of being struck by a Lexus SUV and subsequently impacting a rigid surface such as the frozen ground.
During a pointed cross-examination, defense attorney Robert Alessi attempted to unravel Welcher’s credibility. Alessi questioned the timing and rationale behind changes made to the PowerPoint presentation used for trial discussions. Welcher’s responses raised skepticism as he often provided vague answers, indicating uncertainty about when the updates were made.
