On Friday, Washington Post columnist Catherine Rampell criticized the Democratic Party for not capitalizing on the opportunity to strongly oppose President Donald Trump’s tariffs. According to her, the party has fallen short in effectively articulating the impact of these trade policies on American households and the economy.

In a recent opinion piece, Rampell pointed out that Democrats have provided a lackluster response to Trump’s trade wars, referring to their criticisms as “mealymouthed.” She highlighted that this approach leaves their message weak and ineffective during a crucial time in political discourse.

“The critique of Trump’s trade wars from many Democrats this past week lacks the urgency it requires. They awkwardly navigate between criticizing Trump’s disastrous ideas while promoting their own watered-down suggestions. As a result, their message is not resonating,” she stated.

Rampell underscored the far-reaching consequences of Trump’s tariffs, conveying that they will raise a typical household’s annual expenses by approximately $2,700. She expressed concern over economic indicators that show recession risks rising, companies beginning layoffs, and discontent among long-time allies.

Interestingly, Rampell believes that these adverse effects should provide Democrats with valuable ammunition against Trump, but they seem to be missing their chance.

“If tariffs pose a significant threat to the American economy, this should present an opportunity for Democratic politicians. Instead, they are squandered,” she remarked. She noted the tendency for Democrats to engage in a soft critique, stating, “Rather than making strong statements condemning the negative impact of trade wars, Democratic leaders are caught in a cycle of ‘yes, but’ rhetoric. They claim current tariffs are harmful, while implying that past tariffs align with their hopes for American industry without acknowledging the effects.”

The Contradictory Legacy of Tariffs

Rampell pointed out the contradiction within the Democratic Party regarding tariffs over time. She referenced how they vehemently opposed Trump’s tariffs during the 2018 midterm elections and the 2020 presidential campaign, only to later adopt similar positions when they were in power.

“Former President Biden has almost completely maintained Trump’s existing tariffs, despite initially deriding them. Some tariffs even expanded or morphed into new trade barriers, all while receiving enthusiastic support from party members,” she noted.

Rampell directed her critique at several Democratic figures, including Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Whitmer has positioned herself as a careful critic of Trump’s tariffs, often meeting with Trump to discuss trade policies. However, she acknowledges Trump’s motivations, which further complicates the narrative Democrats wish to present.

“On Wednesday, Governor Whitmer likened Trump’s tariffs to a ‘hammer’ without providing any substantial alternatives. When pressed on how she would enact tariffs differently, she admitted uncertainty. Her commentary reflects a broader issue among Democrats who seem unable to provide tangible solutions,” Rampell stated.

Critiques of Party Leaders

Additionally, Rampell did not shy away from mentioning Senator Elizabeth Warren’s remarks on Trump’s tariffs. Warren has expressed concerns about how Trump’s tariffs would foster price gouging and reward profiteering, yet she has previously backed Biden’s continuation of these tariffs.

“Warren’s main issue with Trump’s tariffs is that they could prompt companies to exploit consumers. However, if that logic is applicable to Trump’s tariffs, it should equally apply to those that Biden has perpetuated,” Rampell argued.

Rampell also described how some leftist populist thinkers primarily challenge Trump’s tariffs because they are not utilized in accordance with their ideological agenda. She asserted that the Democratic Party currently finds itself in a precarious position, having to appeal to its base in pro-tariff sectors, such as labor unions.
