The Department of Homeland Security has shed light on the concerning background of Ian Andre Roberts, the former superintendent of Des Moines public schools. His recent arrest by Immigration and Customs Enforcement has brought disturbing allegations and criminal convictions to the forefront, triggering a wave of scrutiny regarding his qualifications and role in education.
Roberts is currently detained at the Polk County jail under the supervision of the U.S. Marshals Service. According to a statement from DHS, the extensive criminal history and immigration status of Roberts raise serious questions about his fitness for a leadership position in one of Iowa’s largest school districts.
He faces multiple charges, including illegal possession of firearms. A search warrant executed at Roberts’ residence revealed an alarming collection of weapons, including a loaded 9mm pistol tucked under a couch cushion, a rifle discovered in a bedroom closet, and a shotgun found behind a bed frame.
Roberts’ criminal history is extensive. In 2012, he was convicted in Maryland for reckless driving, unsafe operation of a vehicle, and speeding. More recently, in 2022, he received a conviction in Pennsylvania for unlawful possession of a firearm. Additionally, his record includes various serious charges in New York dating back to 1996 for drug-related offenses and weapon possession.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has also revealed that Roberts was served a sealed restraining order from Jackson County, Missouri, in August 2023, though the reasons for this order remain unclear due to its confidentiality.
In a further complication of Roberts’ legal status, investigations uncovered that he had improperly registered to vote as a Democrat in Maryland. This revelation has led to calls for a review of the state’s voter registration protocols.
Despite these alarming charges, Roberts has held high-ranking positions in public education across multiple states, including Maryland, Washington D.C., St. Louis, California, Pennsylvania, and Iowa. After his arrest, he resigned from his position as the superintendent of schools in Des Moines, a role he had only assumed earlier in 2023. Initially placed on paid leave following his arrest, the school board eventually shifted to unpaid leave before accepting his resignation.
His LinkedIn profile lists several educational institutions, claiming attendance at Morgan State University from 2003 to 2007, along with a claimed candidacy for an MBA at MIT’s Sloan School of Management. While Morgan State University confirmed his attendance, they clarified that he did not earn a degree. The Registrar’s Office at MIT could find no record of Roberts ever enrolling, which raises important questions about the authenticity of his claimed academic achievements.
Before his tenure in Des Moines, Roberts led the Millcreek Township School District in Pennsylvania. During his administration, the district faced a significant lawsuit for sex discrimination, wherein a male faculty member alleged that Roberts had favored women over less qualified male candidates for principal positions. This lawsuit was among several that led the school district to settle claims of discrimination totaling over $400,000.
Originally hailing from Guyana, Roberts first entered the United States as a visitor in 1994. He departed and returned multiple times, including re-entering on a student visa in 1999. He submitted several employment authorization applications, receiving approval for three separate times until his last authorization expired in 2020. In 2020, U.S. Customs and Immigration Services issued a notice for him to appear before an immigration judge, which culminated in a removal order a year later.
On September 26, Roberts was apprehended by ICE with assistance from the Iowa State Patrol. Reports indicate that he attempted to evade arrest but was ultimately located hiding in a wooded area. His vehicle contained $3,000 in cash, a fixed-blade knife, and a loaded Glock 9mm pistol, leading to further charges related to firearm possession as an illegal alien.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin expressed serious concerns following the revelations surrounding Roberts’ illegal activities. She stated that a person with multiple weapons charges and a history of drug-related offenses should never have been entrusted to work with children. The Department of Homeland Security, under Under Secretary Noem, emphasized its commitment to prioritizing the safety of children in America.
The news of Roberts’ arrest has sparked significant public outcry and discussions across social media platforms, with many expressing disbelief and anger over the situation. Community members have called for accountability and reforms to ensure that individuals with troubling backgrounds are not placed in critical positions within the education system.
As the impact of this case reverberates throughout the community, stakeholders are left to question how such an individual operated in an influential educational capacity. It raises critical concerns regarding hiring practices and the safeguarding of schools and the children within them.
The implications of this incident will likely prompt a reevaluation of policies governing educational personnel in Des Moines and beyond. As more information becomes available, the need for transparency and rigorous vetting processes remains paramount to protect the integrity of educational environments.
