What began as an initiative by two Illinois detectives to engage the public in solving longstanding cold cases has resulted in a staggering discovery. Detectives Andrew Houghton and Matt Vartanian created the true-crime podcast Somebody Knows Something in October 2024, following a suggestion from Elgin Police Department Chief Ana Lalley.

Their mission focused on using contemporary investigative techniques to bring resolution to families grappling with the pain of unsolved cases.

“Initially, we both hesitated,” Vartanian recounted. “But after some reflection, it became clear that this could be a powerful tool for law enforcement.”

Focus on Karen Schepers’ Disappearance

The detectives turned their attention to the chilling case of 23-year-old Karen Schepers, who vanished in 1983. After an evening of celebrating with colleagues at P.M. Bentley’s, a bar in Carpentersville, Illinois, Schepers left the establishment around 1 a.m. on April 16 with her 1980 Toyota Celica. She never returned home.

“We realized that people beyond Illinois might have insights into these cases,” Vartanian added. “By getting this information out there, we could potentially find answers for the victims’ families.”

Despite various theories and widespread speculation about her fate, the case stagnated, remaining open yet unresolved for over four decades.

Investigative Challenges and Past Efforts

Schepers’ disappearance was revisited by the Illinois State Police in the late 1980s and again in 2010, yet no significant leads emerged. “We did multiple media campaigns in 2008 and 2009, including billboards, to revitalize public interest,” said Houghton. “Back then, new DNA analysis technologies offered a glimmer of hope.”

Despite these efforts, detectives were unable to follow any substantial leads until the podcast project commenced.

“When we examined the Karen Schepers case, we understood we could share everything we knew since the investigation had hit a dead end,” Vartanian explained. “The passage of time left us with many unanswered questions.”

Utilizing Modern Techniques Alongside Traditional Methods

With the family’s permission, Houghton and Vartanian began to connect the dots in Schepers’ case by balancing traditional police work with advanced technology. “This investigation was very much about boots on the ground,” Houghton noted. “We drove around, knocked on doors, and explored new routes and bodies of water that existed back in 1983.”

While speaking to locals who knew Karen, the detectives painted a vivid picture of her last known moments. Their research included assessing the weather and other critical details that could help illuminate the mystery surrounding her disappearance.

A Breakthrough Discovery

During their investigation, detectives uncovered important historical information regarding the Fox River, which had flooded around the time of Schepers’ disappearance. This revelation was pivotal, compelling them to call in expert divers to search the river.

“We received numerous tips suggesting she could not be in the river,” Houghton recalled. “People insisted it was too shallow. Yet the river has varying depths, with some areas being significantly deeper.”

Search Efforts Yield Results

On March 24, 2025, the Elgin Police Department enlisted Chaos Divers, a dedicated non-profit team specializing in underwater recovery, to comb the waters of the Fox River. In a heart-stopping turn of events, Schepers’ vehicle emerged from the murk, concluding a 41-year-old mystery.

“When we received the news that her car had been located, time stood still. Each one of us drew an audible gasp,” her family expressed in a heartfelt statement. “The revelation has finally redirected our lives, bringing closure to the haunting question: Where is Karen?”

Identification and Final Closure

The divers retrieved the vehicle intact, allowing officials to identify Schepers’ remains using dental records. Houghton remarked, “This case felt unique. We were uncertain what had transpired. Our approach allowed us to gather crucial insights.”

He emphasized the importance of perseverance, stating that even if only one case resolves through these efforts, the impact on families is invaluable.

Next Steps for the Podcast

Looking ahead, Houghton and Vartanian are already planning the next case for the second season of their podcast, hinting at a focus on a homicide investigation. Recently, they were able to provide Schepers’ 90-year-old mother with significant mementos from her daughter’s vehicle, including her sapphire birthstone ring and high school graduation tassel, offering a tangible connection to her lost child.

“We wish continual success in tackling cold cases,” Schepers’ family stated. “Miracles do happen.”
