EXCLUSIVE REPORT: High-ranking officials at the Department of Homeland Security have confirmed that the agency’s Investigations unit is now involved in a case regarding an educator from Virginia Beach and his brother. They stand accused of plotting an attack against ICE agents, potentially using explosive rounds.
On Wednesday, Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin revealed that John Wilson Bennett, the assistant principal at Kempsville High School, and his older brother, Mark Booth Bennett, were overheard discussing their plans at a Vietnamese restaurant in Virginia Beach. They allegedly conspired to travel to Nevada with intentions to attack ICE agents, claiming it was in retaliation for what they described as the “kidnapping” of civilians during recent immigration enforcement operations.
McLaughlin expressed her horror at the situation, stating, “It’s chilling that a human being, particularly someone in the field of education, would plot to ambush and kill ICE law enforcement officers. They even discussed obtaining high-caliber rifles capable of penetrating bulletproof vests used by law enforcement.” This statement followed earlier reports detailing the arrests of the two adult brothers.
“Thanks to the collaborative efforts of Homeland Security Investigations and our law enforcement partners, these individuals are now behind bars,” she added.
John Bennett has been a faculty member at Kempsville High School, located in inland Virginia Beach, since 2009. Currently, the school has placed him on leave pending investigation.
According to McLaughlin, DHS coordinated with law enforcement agencies after an off-duty Norfolk police officer reported overhearing the brothers at a Vietnamese restaurant on November 17. They allegedly discussed a plot to “kill police officers and ICE agents.” Reports indicate that Mark Bennett expressed intentions to connect with like-minded individuals in Las Vegas, where he would acquire firearms featuring explosive rounds.
Authorities arrested Mark Bennett two days later at Norfolk International Airport as he was en route to Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, with plans to continue to Las Vegas. John Bennett was also apprehended on the same day.
McLaughlin pointed out that this case highlights a concerning trend in violence against immigration enforcement agents. She noted a staggering 1,150% increase in assaults against ICE agents, alongside an 8,000-fold rise in death threats directed at them as they perform their duties in safeguarding the nation.
“They risk their lives each day to remove dangerous individuals including murderers, rapists, and terrorists from our communities. Additionally, they face bounties on their heads, threats directed at their families, and ongoing stalking and doxxing online,” McLaughlin remarked. “Our officers are facing an unprecedented level of threats to their safety and that of their families.”
Mark Bennett’s attorney, Happy O’Brien, contested the portrayal of the events leading to the arrests. According to O’Brien, his client had been traveling to Nevada for an F1 (Formula One) motorsports event with his child. He argued that the restaurant conversation did not warrant the serious implications of a plotted violence and likened it to a scene from the NBC sitcom “Seinfeld,” where characters often had light-hearted, ambiguous dialogues.
As a result of the investigation, both John and Mark Bennett face charges of conspiracy to commit malicious wounding.
The alarming behavior displayed by the Bennetts has raised crucial questions about the growing hostility toward law enforcement, especially among those charged with enforcing immigration laws. As discussions surrounding immigration reform intensify, concerns over the safety of those tasked with these responsibilities have risen to the forefront. The situation serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers faced by law enforcement personnel in their daily operations.
The DHS’s response signifies a serious commitment to identifying and addressing threats against its personnel. As investigations continue, this case may serve as a critical reference point regarding the treatment of law enforcement by the general public.
