The Department of Homeland Security has responded firmly to Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell’s public accusation regarding the recent actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. Following a joint operation with the Tennessee Highway Patrol, nearly 200 illegal immigrants were arrested in Nashville. O’Connell claimed that ICE agents do not reflect the safety values of the community.
ICE and THP confirmed the arrest of 196 illegal immigrants during this operation. A significant number, 95 individuals, had prior criminal convictions or were facing pending charges. Furthermore, over 30 of those arrested had previously been removed from the United States, only to re-enter illegally, which constitutes a federal felony.
Despite the operation’s success in apprehending individuals who pose potential threats to public safety, DHS officials countered O’Connell’s remarks. In a formal news release, they stated that he appears to support pro-illegal immigration policies and disregards the safety of Nashville residents. The release quoted DHS Assistant Secretary of Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin emphasizing the importance of unity among public officials in combating crime.
McLaughlin highlighted a disturbing trend where attacks on ICE personnel have surged by an alarming 413%. She noted that while the goal of these operations is to protect American citizens, certain politicians, including Mayor O’Connell, seem more inclined to defend illegal immigrants than support law enforcement efforts to ensure community safety.
The operation resulted in removing gang members, sex offenders, and other violent criminals from Nashville streets. McLaughlin stated that DHS, under the leadership of President Trump and Secretary Kristi Noem, remains committed to supporting victims and empowering ICE agents to uphold lawful security measures.
