The iconic structure that once hosted the “Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser” at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, is set to undergo a significant transformation. Disney has officially confirmed to local news outlets that the building will be repurposed into office space.
Rumors regarding the fate of the shuttered hotel began circulating in late January. Multiple sources indicated that Disney was planning to breathe new life into the building by converting it into an office environment.
Disney later confirmed to WESH 2, a prominent Orlando outlet, that the “Imagineering” department will occupy the space. This decision has reportedly been in the works since October.
According to Disney’s website, “Walt Disney Imagineering is the creative engine that designs and builds all Disney theme parks, resorts, attractions, and cruise ships worldwide.” Additionally, the department is responsible for overseeing creative elements of Disney games, merchandise product development, and publishing ventures.
As of now, there is no clear timeline for the renovation work or the anticipated move-in date for employees. While enthusiasts hoped the venue would evolve into a new form of attraction, the conversion to office space suggests a shift in focus for Disney.
The “Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser” offered a unique two-night experience similar to a traditional cruise. Guests became immersed in a captivating narrative that unfolded throughout their stay, allowing fans to fully embrace their love for the Star Wars universe.
This 100-room hotel finally opened its doors in March 2022, though it faced a series of delays prior to its launch.
In May 2023, Disney announced that the Starcruiser would embark on its final voyage at the end of September. The experience garnered praise for its storytelling and immersive quality, yet it faced scrutiny regarding its high price point. Rates for a two-person cabin started at nearly $5,000, while a four-person cabin cost around $6,000.
Besides accommodations, the rate included entertainment, meals, and an excursion to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, further sweetening the deal for fans.
After the closure announcement, Star Wars enthusiasts expressed hope that the original structure would remain an attraction in some capacity. In a June 2023 interview with travel site The Points Guy, Josh D’Amaro, the chairman of Disney Experiences, hinted that “something will happen” with the building, although he did not disclose specific plans.
Fast forward to January 2024, a permit for “general construction” was filed by Disney, signaling that the transformation was officially underway. The evolution of this former hotel into office space reflects Disney’s adaptability and forward-looking vision.
As Disney reimagines its spaces and experiences, the change from a one-of-a-kind hotel to a hub for creativity at Imagineering underscores the company’s focus on innovation and growth. While the Galactic Starcruiser may have closed its doors, its legacy and impact on the Star Wars fan community endure.
