Dustin May, a promising pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, faced a near-fatal incident last year, an experience that put everything into perspective.
While recovering from a second Tommy John surgery over the summer, May encountered a bizarre and serious complication. While enjoying a simple meal, a leaf of lettuce became lodged in his throat, causing a tear in his esophagus that required immediate emergency surgery.
The story highlights not just May’s physical trials but also the role of support systems in overcoming adversity. Initially reluctant to visit the hospital, it was his wife who urged him to seek medical attention. “If I wouldn’t have gone into surgery that night, I wouldn’t have woken up, probably. Since his debut with the Dodgers in 2019, May has showcased an extraordinary pitching arm. However, injuries have plagued his career, limiting him to just 25 starts since 2021 due to two surgeries and this unsettling incident with lettuce.
Despite these challenges, when May has been on the mound, he has delivered solid performances. His earned run average (ERA) in this span stands at an impressive 3.24. This season, he has pitched in all five starts, maintaining a roughly 4.00 ERA.
Reflecting on his return to the game, he expressed gratitude and joy. “I feel great. It’s just a blessing to be able to put on the uniform and be back on the field now,
