Nearly 600 days after his abduction by Hamas during the tragic events of October 7, Edan Alexander returned to his hometown of Tenafly, New Jersey on Thursday. His arrival was met with an outpouring of emotion and support from hundreds of residents who lined the rain-soaked streets to welcome him home.
Residents waved American and Israeli flags and held handmade signs, radiating joy as they greeted the young man who had endured a lengthy and harrowing captivity. Alexander, now 21, smiled and waved from a black SUV as it rolled slowly through the town, escorted by a police motorcade.
“Our community has been praying for him—585 days,” remarked Rabbi Mordechai Shain, the Alexander family’s longtime rabbi. He noted the weekly marches held in support of Edan and expressed the profound connection the community felt with him through this difficult period. “It was like we lived it,” he added, highlighting the shared burden of hope and concern that united the community.
Raised in Tenafly, Edan Alexander moved to Israel at the age of 18 to volunteer for military service in the Israel Defense Forces, specifically the elite Golani Brigade. Embracing his heritage, he lived with his grandparents in Tel Aviv and spent time at Kibbutz Hazor, joining a group of lone soldiers who stand for Israel’s defense.
While serving in the IDF, at just 19 years old, Alexander was kidnapped by Hamas during their violent surprise attack on southern Israel. This incident forever changed the lives of those who loved him, plunging them into turmoil and uncertainty.
In May, after more than 19 months in captivity, Alexander was freed in a remarkable turn of events described as a goodwill gesture amidst quiet negotiations involving U.S. officials and Hamas. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Special Hostage Envoy Adam Boehler played pivotal roles in securing his release, demonstrating the complex interplay of diplomacy in hostage situations.
Rabbi Shain, who has been a guiding figure for Edan since his childhood, fondly described him as a beacon of quiet kindness. “Even when he was a little boy, he was the one who helped without anyone knowing,” said the rabbi. Notably, on the day of his capture, Edan had selflessly taken a friend’s military shift, allowing another soldier to go home—a decision that tragically led to his abduction.
In the aftermath of his release from Hamas, Rabbi Shain emphasized the importance of healing for Edan and his family. “As a person and a family, he just wants to go back to life and move on,” the rabbi explained. Nonetheless, he acknowledged the profound psychological and physical scars left by the harrowing ordeal. “This is a process that will take time to navigate, especially since we are unaware of the extent of the torture he endured,” he noted.
Edan’s return not only reflects personal resiliency but also highlights the community’s enduring support throughout his absence. Weekly prayers, marches, and celebrations marked the days he was gone, showcasing the unity in Tenafly’s Jewish community. “Over 800 people came to his Hanukkah birthday celebration,” Rabbi Shain recalled, emphasizing the care taken to ensure Edan knew he was not forgotten.
Following his release, Alexander is expected to spend time in New Jersey, where he will focus on his recovery. Reports indicate that he emerged from captivity weighing only 121 pounds and having suffered injuries to his hands, illustrating the physical toll of his lengthy ordeal.
As Edan begins this new chapter of his life, the support from the community continues to play a crucial role. The heartfelt welcome he received underscores the strength of human connection in times of extreme adversity.
Edan Alexander’s courageous return is not just a personal triumph but a reminder of the resilience embedded in communities facing hardship. The journey of healing that lies ahead will require time, support, and understanding as he finds his footing after such a life-altering experience. The Tenafly community stands ready to assist him as he embarks on this path, demonstrating the profound impact of compassion in times of crisis.
