Teachers across the United States, particularly in Massachusetts, are expressing deep concerns regarding President Donald Trump’s recent executive actions aimed at reforming educational content in American schools. Critics argue that these measures threaten academic freedom and the quality of education that students receive.
On January 29, Trump signed an executive order that eliminates federal funding for K-12 schools that incorporate Critical Race Theory (CRT) in their curriculum. This action also targets institutions that promote what the administration terms “radical indoctrination” related to gender ideology.
Parents have vocally opposed the teaching of CRT and other contentious topics at school board meetings nationwide over recent years. During his presidential campaign, Trump promised to withhold federal aid from schools promoting CRT and any discussions he deemed inappropriate in terms of race and sexuality.

Marcus Walker, a humanities teacher at Fenway High School in Boston, also expressed concerns. He warned that these actions could lead to a distorted view of American history in classrooms. “All of that gets short-circuited if we’re teaching history that is dishonest,” Walker said.
Trump’s actions have sparked diverse reactions. On one side, national teachers’ unions criticized his efforts, claiming they unfairly malign educators and complicate their teaching environment. American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten remarked, “Today is a sad day because the Trump administration is doing exactly what it accuses others of: creating division and fear in classrooms across America.” This statement underscores the polarized nature of the debate surrounding educational content.
Conversely, supporters of Trump’s educational reforms praise the move. Nicole Neily, president of Parents Defending Education, stated, “President Trump’s Executive Orders on DEI, CRT, gender ideology, and school choice are extremely welcome news to parental rights advocates across the country.” She emphasized the need for an administration that prioritizes parental involvement and aims to reduce what she described as leftist ideology in the classroom.
As testing scores show a decline in student performance, Trump’s administration continues to evaluate strategies that may include dismantling the U.S. Department of Education. This prospect has raised alarms among educators who fear further erosion of their rights and academic freedom.
