El Salvador’s President, Nayib Bukele, has made a significant proposal to accept illegal immigrants of any nationality facing deportation from the United States. This initiative involves booking these individuals into El Salvador’s prison system for a fee, aiming to alleviate some of the burden on U.S. detention facilities.
This groundbreaking offer emerged after a meeting between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Bukele, which took place at Bukele’s lakeside residence just outside San Salvador on Monday. The discussions highlighted a potential shift in how the U.S. handles deportations, particularly concerning migrants who have committed crimes.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), President Bukele emphasized the opportunity for the U.S. to outsource part of its prison system. He expressed a willingness to accept only convicted criminals, including U.S. citizens, into the country’s mega-prison known as CECOT.
