New York Giants supporters may have taken the Eli Manning-Tom Coughlin partnership for granted. That duo held court from November 21, 2004, until January 3, 2016, serving as the only quarterback-head coach tandem in the franchise’s history until now. Since Coughlin’s departure, the organization has experienced significant upheaval, seeing 17 different coaching hires, including five just in this season alone.
In the wake of John Harbaugh’s hiring, Manning expresses hope for a revival of the team’s former glory. He believes that Harbaugh’s experience could steer the Giants back on course toward successful seasons.
In a recent conversation, Manning conveyed his thoughts on Harbaugh’s appointment, stating, “It couldn’t have worked out any better. I knew the Giants needed a new coach. You want someone with head coaching experience who understands the pressures of the New York media and can take charge of not just the team but the entire organization.” He noted the challenge in finding a great leader who embodies these qualities, remarking on the surprise of Harbaugh’s availability. “Suddenly, there’s John Harbaugh sitting there. It’s just unbelievable, a person who has excelled in the NFL. It could not be a better fit. I’m excited for him and confident he will do an outstanding job revitalizing the Giants.”
John Mara, the team’s owner, has faced significant scrutiny regarding the Giants’ persistent struggles, which have been ongoing since Manning’s tenure. His decision to bench Manning for Geno Smith in 2017 marked the end of the quarterback’s consecutive games streak. Following a dismal 3-13 season, the Giants drafted Saquon Barkley instead of pursuing talents like Josh Allen or Sam Darnold, aiming to secure another championship for Manning.
With the team’s struggles, the Giants hired various general managers and coaches over the years, including Dave Gettleman, Joe Schoen, Ben McAdoo, Pat Shurmur, Joe Judge, and Brian Daboll. The franchise also faced criticism for handling a domestic violence case involving former kicker John Brown, among other missteps in roster decisions.
Despite these challenges, Manning emphasizes that no one desires a winning team more than Mara. He acknowledges the owner’s commitment to success might sometimes lead to questionable decisions.
“That’s why I chose to join this franchise over twenty years ago,” Manning said. “Their dedication to winning championships resonated with me. All they want is to field a competitive team. After spending two decades in this organization, I can confirm that their commitment is genuine.”

Since winning Super Bowl XLVI to conclude the 2011 season, the Giants have only reached the playoffs twice, clinching victory in one game. The prevailing concern is a lack of culture within the organization, as winning often breeds a strong and positive team culture. Manning is optimistic Harbaugh can help restore that culture to the franchise.
He believes that building belief across the organization, not just among key players, is essential. “It’s about everyone in the building understanding that what we’re creating is correct. Everyone must be held accountable and meet high standards without compromise. It’s crucial to do the fundamental things exceptionally well, ensuring everyone is committed to a clear improvement plan during every offseason. Creating a close-knit group that believes in the capacity to overcome challenges is vital for success,” Manning said.
Manning acknowledges the difficulty of the task, stating, “Winning is never easy. It shouldn’t be simple. Challenges prepare you for tough circumstances throughout a season.” He stresses the need for hard work, dedication, and resilience in the pursuit of success on the field.
