In a recent interview, Elizabeth Weber, the first wife of iconic musician Billy Joel, defended him against accusations of being a homewrecker. These claims surfaced as part of discussions surrounding the breakdown of her previous marriage to Joel’s best friend, Jon Small.
Weber expressed her thoughts candidly in a conversation with Us Weekly, stating, “I never thought of Bill as the homewrecker.” She reflected on her marriage to Small, acknowledging it lacked depth, which ultimately contributed to its downfall.
Billy Joel met Elizabeth Weber in the 1960s while she was still married to Small. Their relationship undeniably changed the dynamics within their social group and led to significant consequences within both Weber’s and Joel’s lives. Their off-screen saga mirrored the complexities often seen in real-life relationships, encompassing love, friendship, and betrayal.
In the documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes, Joel shared the emotional turmoil he faced when he revealed his feelings for Weber to Small. The consequences were profound. Joel recounted feeling guilty for loving someone else’s wife, which haunted him for years.
“I was just in love with a woman, and I got punched in the nose, which I deserved,” Joel said in his retrospective account. He mentioned the heavy emotions that accompanied his actions, particularly since Small and Weber had a child together.
Weber directly countered claims that she viewed Joel as a homewrecker, emphasizing that her marriage to Small was already in distress. “We didn’t have a deep connection, Jon and I,” she stated. She added that the birth of their son, Sean, symbolized a new beginning for her life. The joy of motherhood transformed her perspective, rendering her past marital connection with Small unremarkable.
Following the end of her marriage to Small, Weber reunited with Joel. They married in 1973 but ultimately divorced in 1982. Their union and subsequent separation highlight the complexities of relationships within the entertainment sphere.
Billy Joel’s journey continued as he married supermodel Christie Brinkley in 1985 and welcomed a daughter, Alexa Ray Joel. Their high-profile marriage ended in 1994. Afterward, Joel married cookbook author Katie Lee from 2004 to 2009 and found love once again with former executive Alexis Roderick, with whom he shares two daughters, Della Rose and Remy Anne.
Additionally, Weber opened up about her current relationship with Joel, stating that they still maintain a form of communication. “If I wanna talk to him or if I have something to say, I am able to contact him whenever I want to,” she said. However, she acknowledged that both of them have moved on and that Joel’s focus is on his present life and family.
Previously this year, Billy Joel faced a significant health challenge, being diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, which is characterized by an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid around the brain. This condition has affected his hearing, vision, and balance. The diagnosis forced him to cancel all scheduled concerts, leaving fans concerned about his wellbeing.
In the documentary, Weber shared her insights about her earlier relationship decisions, admitting, “We were very young, and we didn’t really know much of anything.” This candid reflection underscores the lessons learned as they navigated the complexities of love and personal growth.
As Weber and Joel’s stories evolved, the depth of their emotional landscape became evident. Small, reflecting on the collapse of his marriage, acknowledged that Joel’s feelings for Weber impacted their friendship profoundly. “I kept seeing that Billy was not the same guy. Something was the matter,” he recalled. The devastation of losing two close relationships at once weighed heavily on him.
Despite the heartbreak caused by their romantic entanglement, Joel ultimately remained grateful for Small’s support during his darkest moments. Small took him to the hospital following his second suicide attempt, emphasizing their complex bond amid turmoil.
In a moment of reconciliation, Small said, “I finally got over it where it was like, ‘OK.’ He thought it was over for him, but, to me, he didn’t even start living yet.” This sentiment encapsulates the intricate paths of forgiveness and understanding that both men have traversed in the years following their shared heartaches.
The intertwining stories of Weber, Joel, and Small reveal not only the challenges of love and personal relationships but also the growth that comes from facing adversity. As Weber stated, “When you just find someone you’re comfortable with….” The echoes of their past continue to resonate, reminding us that connections can be both a source of joy and a catalyst for personal reflection.
In navigating the complexities of their relationships, these individuals have emerged with renewed perspectives on love, friendship, and the importance of understanding. They showcase how even amid personal anguish, there lies the potential for new beginnings and healing.
