Ellen DeGeneres, the beloved comedian and former talk show host, has not dismissed the idea of returning to the talk show scene. During a recent live conversation with broadcaster Richard Bacon, DeGeneres reflected on her past hosting experiences and what the future might hold.
The 67-year-old entertainer expresses her nostalgia for her previous show, stating that she misses many aspects of the role. However, she acknowledges that the traditional talk show format may not resonate with today’s audiences.
She candidly mentioned, “I wish it did, because I would do the same thing here. I would love to do that again, but I just feel like people are watching on their phones, or people aren’t really paying attention as much to televisions, because we’re so inundated with information and entertainment.”
Since her relocation to England in November 2024, DeGeneres has been taking her time to determine her next professional steps. She admits to moving very carefully and thoughtfully, saying, “I want to have fun, I want to do something. I do like my chickens but I’m a little bit bored.” This newfound tranquility in her life contrasts with her once-busy schedule as a talk show host.
DeGeneres hosted “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” for an impressive 19 seasons from 2003 until 2022. The program ended two years after explosive allegations of a toxic workplace surfaced in July 2020. These allegations cast a shadow over her celebrated career.
During the opening monologue of the 18th season of her show, she openly addressed the controversy, issuing an on-air apology. She described herself as “a work in progress,” noting that she was especially trying to improve her patience. She felt compelled to discuss the negative perceptions surrounding her, stating, “No matter what, any article that came up, it was like, ‘She’s mean,’ and it’s like, how do I deal with this without sounding like a victim or ‘poor me’ or complaining? But I wanted to address it.”
DeGeneres continued by recognizing that her direct nature could be misconstrued as unkindness. She explained, “I’m a direct person, and I’m very blunt, and I guess sometimes that means that… I’m mean?” She revealed that it pains her to think people perceive her this way, saying it feels “hurtful” and expressing a desire to change such views.
As for her recent move overseas, DeGeneres disclosed that it was affected by the outcome of the presidential election in the United States. She stated that she and her wife, actress Portia de Rossi, initially planned to divide their time between England and the U.S. However, the election results led them to reconsider.
“We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in,’” she recalled. “And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here.'” DeGeneres and de Rossi quickly adapted to their new surroundings, describing England as a place where they feel a strong sense of contentment.
After settling into the English countryside, DeGeneres and her wife have noticed significant differences in their new lifestyle, remarking that spectacular scenery is abundant. They appreciate how animals are treated within the community, and DeGeneres emphasized the charm of what she describes as a far simpler way of life.
Reflecting on her move, DeGeneres shared, “We moved here in November, which was not the ideal time, but I saw snow for the first time in my life. We love it here. Portia flew her horses here, and I have chickens, and we had sheep for about two weeks.”
As the former talk show host contemplates her next venture, she remains focused on enjoying the present and the beautiful life unfolding around her in England. She continues to navigate the balance between addressing her significant past and embracing new opportunities.
The world watches closely as DeGeneres contemplates the possibility of another talk show. Her journey reflects not just a search for professional reinvention but also a deeper quest for personal fulfillment and happiness.
