Elon Musk claims to have saved U.S. taxpayers over $160 million during his initial three months in charge of the Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE. His unique experience included late-night ice cream from the White House kitchen, a diminutive office space, and building a friendship with former President Donald Trump.
Fox News Digital had the opportunity to participate in an on-the-record discussion with Musk in the Roosevelt Room at the White House. The gathering included a small group of reporters focused on Musk’s insights regarding his first 100 days as a special government employee.
Musk described his federal position, which allows him to work with the government for no more than 130 days within a year, as “an intense period.” He often found himself working in Washington, D.C., nearly seven days a week on his DOGE initiatives.
Intent on reducing his presence, Musk plans to spend one or two days a week in D.C. or every other week, providing assistance to the Trump administration at the president’s discretion.
During the conversation, Musk disclosed that he has slept nights in the Lincoln bedroom of the White House numerous times. He humorously recounted instances where Trump would invite him to stay, reflecting on their good friendship. The invitation usually came through casual conversation while flying together.
“The president would ask, ’Do you want to stay over?’ and I’d respond, ‘Sure,’ leading to a night in the Lincoln bedroom,” Musk reminisced. He emphasized that he never formally requested these stays, explaining how the experience felt surreal.
Musk laughed as he detailed a running joke in which Trump would remind him to enjoy the ice cream in the kitchen late at night. There were moments when he indulged in an entire tub of caramel Häagen-Dazs, describing it as “epic” and praising Trump as a gracious host.
“The president told me to make sure to check out the ice cream, and I obliged,” Musk said with a chuckle, reflecting on his late-night culinary escapades.
Musk revealed some humor regarding his workspace at the White House, which he fondly described as a “comically tiny office” on the top floor. Despite the modest size, he quipped about having the biggest monitor for viewing confidential information, acknowledging an occasional diversion into gaming.
When pressed about the action game he played, Musk lightheartedly mentioned, “Diablo in the Path of Exile,” indicating it was a brief escape from his intense responsibilities.
Discussing DOGE, Musk expressed pride in the progress made during his tenure, though he admitted there is still room for improvement. He noted that they had achieved more than had occurred under past administrations, despite the challenges that lay ahead.
“We have been effective, but I believe we can be even more so,” Musk stated. He drew comparisons between DOGE initiatives and the rhetoric used by previous Democratic leaders, remarking on the irony in the parallels.
Musk candidly referred to the shifts in political ideologies, claiming that the goals of safe cities, secure borders, and responsible spending used to resonate more with Democrats. He emphasized the need for common-sense approaches moving forward.
Musk stated that understanding the intricacies of the federal government was crucial in mapping out strategies to combat waste and fraud. Addressing how “the federal government is a gigantic beast,” he described the complexity of navigating its structure.
He characterized a new administration as similar to running a start-up, indicating that efficiencies would be identified as the operational rhythm improved. His aim is to devote more time to his own companies now that DOGE appears to be on a more stable trajectory.
Fox News Digital raised questions about Musk’s enjoyment during his first quarter with DOGE. He responded, distinguishing between moments of fun and times when facing adversity or criticism.
“I’m having fun about 60 to 70 percent of the time, depending on the week,” he noted, sharing the duality of challenges such as relentless criticism and the satisfaction of serving the American taxpayer by addressing wasteful spending.
During the meeting, a DOGE official indicated that just over 20,000 federal employees have been separated from their positions. However, he pointed out that the government had hired 26,000 new employees, suggesting a net gain in workforce numbers.
Musk emphasized the importance of streamlining the federal workforce to enhance efficiency while ensuring more individuals are engaged in productive roles outside government oversight.
Addressing fraudulent activities, Musk confirmed that DOGE has referred numerous cases of suspected fraud to the Department of Justice for further investigation. Although the wheels of justice may turn slowly, he expressed hope that they would yield results.
As the meeting concluded, Musk lightheartedly remarked on the surreal experience of leading DOGE. He quipped, “Are we in a simulation? How did we get here?” summing up his ongoing reflections on his role in government.
Musk expressed his appreciation for the dedicated members of the DOGE team, acknowledging their commitment to public service amid potential financial opportunities elsewhere.
With fewer than 100 employees, DOGE operates more as a voluntary body, allowing individuals to make personal choices regarding staying with the organization.
When asked if DOGE is winding down, Musk firmly stated, “No.” He elaborated, “DOGE is a way of life, much like Buddhism; it transcends traditional leadership structures.”
Through humor and sincerity, Musk offered an engaging glimpse into his experience at DOGE, highlighting both the challenges and moments of levity that have marked his journey along the way.
