Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has set its sights on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to tackle potential fraud. Reports from the Wall Street Journal indicate that DOGE has obtained access to key payment and contracting systems within CMS in a bid to identify fraudulent activities.
Musk has publicly argued on social media platform X that Medicare and Medicaid are hotspots for “big money fraud.” With this assertion, DOGE aims to follow up on earlier efforts that previously led to significant changes in other government agencies.
CMS is responsible for overseeing Medicare, which provides health coverage to older and disabled Americans, as well as Medicaid, which insures over 140 million low-income individuals. The agency routinely deals with issues related to improper payments that may stem from fraud or administrative oversights by states, contractors, or providers.
According to the Wall Street Journal, insiders familiar with DOGE’s operations within CMS have revealed that Musk’s allies do not currently have access to databases containing identifiable personal health information of Medicare or Medicaid enrollees. This protective measure ensures that sensitive data remains confidential while enabling the search for fraudulent activities.
This latest initiative comes just days after DOGE executed a campaign against the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), resulting in the termination of 50 senior officials and the integration of the agency into the State Department.
Sources report that signs have been removed from USAID’s headquarters located in the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, D.C. Additionally, the computer systems have been transferred to DOGE’s oversight. USAID, with approximately $40 billion in appropriations last year, plays a crucial role in distributing foreign aid and development assistance worldwide.
A major factor behind these drastic changes is the directive from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, acting on Trump’s executive order, which paused all U.S. foreign assistance managed by the State Department and USAID. This temporary moratorium places a significant number of humanitarian and development programs on hold.
The 90-day pause in funding has already disrupted numerous U.S.-funded programs, affecting global humanitarian efforts. Many aid organizations have initiated layoffs as they struggle to meet payroll obligations due to halted funding.
As the DOGE campaign unfolds, the focus on Medicare presents a critical opportunity to combat financial waste and misuse in vital health programs. The potential findings of DOGE’s investigations could lead to wider reforms and stricter oversight of government spending.
Elon Musk’s initiatives could reshape not only how Medicare operates but also promote greater efficiency across federal agencies. Stakeholders will closely monitor the evolving landscape of government efficiency as DOGE continues its mission.
