Embracing Veterans Day: Transforming Gratitude into Action for Our Heroes

What significance does Veterans Day hold for you? As this important holiday approaches, a common narrative often emerges. It suggests that veterans are broken individuals in need of our compassion due to the physical or psychological struggles they encounter. While this reflects a significant reality for many who deserve our unwavering support, an entire dimension of our veterans and their families remains overlooked during these expressions of thanks for their service.

Having served nearly 23 years in the military, primarily within Special Operations, I transitioned into a professional storyteller, crafting and performing plays that revolve around the military community and the impact of the Afghanistan War. Through engaging with hundreds in 40 cities, I gathered insights from both civilians and veterans alike, revealing layers to the military experience often missed.

The Unseen Strength of Veterans and Their Families

Veterans and their families embody a profound sense of purpose. They possess unique skills that empower them to navigate significant stressors. Moreover, they have the ability to connect with individuals across diverse backgrounds and perspectives. This capacity could very well illuminate the path for our politically fragmented society.

Veteran Leaders Making a Difference

Consider the inspiring stories of three veteran leaders. Each one sheds light on the remarkable impact veterans can have in shaping our communities.

Ben Owen’s Journey of Redemption

Initially, Ben Owen’s enlistment in the military was abruptly interrupted by an injury, leading to a medical discharge. Following his service, he faced homelessness, criminal activities, and devastating opioid addiction. Wandering through treacherous neighborhoods in South Memphis, Ben discovered a 12-step program that paved his escape from addiction. However, this personal turnaround ignited a fierce commitment to return for those left behind.

With assistance from local law enforcement, judges, and business owners, Ben and his wife, Jess, transformed entire neighborhoods. Through his nonprofit, We Fight Monsters, they actively work with community members to dismantle drug trafficking, gang activity, and other sources of crime. In place of despair, they are cultivating hope.

Elisha Perkins: Overcoming Adversity

Elisha “Perk” Perkins served as a communications officer during one of the most dangerous deployments in the Korengal Valley of Death. A roadside bomb upended her vehicle, claiming the lives of her comrades while she endured significant injuries. Following this traumatic experience, she faced not only multiple instances of cancer but also battled intense mental health struggles.

Amidst these challenges, a glimmer of hope emerged. Encouraged by a friend, Perk started a nonprofit dedicated to training service dogs for veterans, inspired by her own journey with a dog she trained named
