Katz detailed how he and eight others managed to board a vessel helmed by Eli, a seasoned Israeli sailor who focused solely on navigating back home. In his statement, he recounted the toil of a 17-hour journey.

“I can’t say it was the best conditions, but it was definitely doable,” Katz noted, expressing his longing to reunite with his wife and four children during such tumultuous times. The choice was clear for him; even amid hostility, no place felt safer than home.

He added, “The thought of not being at home and not being with my family was very difficult. I believe any Israeli would feel the same way in a time like this.”

Rescue Efforts and Volunteer Spirit

Others like Shimi Grossman, a volunteer for the rescue agency Zaka, have also felt the urgent call to return. Grossman traveled from the United States to London, followed by a stop in Sharm al-Sheikh, Egypt, before devising a plan to reach Israel’s southern border at Taba.

“I needed to get back so I could help the people in Israel,” Grossman stated, emphasizing the critical support needed during these turbulent times.

For individuals like Uzi Sofer, the urgency of rescue operations came too late. Sofer had been on a business trip in Boston and was scheduled to return home just in time for his daughter’s wedding. Now stranded in Budapest, he anxiously awaited a flight back.

“I was supposed to fly back on Friday for the wedding this week,” Sofer lamented, sharing the frustration of his daughter’s decision to postpone the wedding until next month, realizing her father would not make it home in time.

Although expressing some relief, Sofer emphasized his desire to reunite with family. “I’m not stressed now, but I still want to be in Israel. God willing, this July, I will celebrate twice – both my daughter’s wedding and Israel’s victory over Iran.”
