Emma Heming Willis has recently opened up about her husband Bruce Willis’ health struggles as a result of his dementia diagnosis. During an interview on the ABC special Emma & Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey, she spoke candidly with Diane Sawyer about the emotional toll of navigating Bruce’s condition.
Emma shared that recalling the moment of Bruce’s initial diagnosis evokes mixed emotions for her. “It’s really gray for me where Bruce’s disease started to come in,” she explained, reminiscing about how he once took their daughters to school regularly.
As these familiar routines began to fade, she felt increasingly concerned. Emma commented, “I thought that is so weird.” Rather than confronting the situation directly, she chose to take over the responsibilities herself.
Emma noticed troubling signs well before Bruce received his formal diagnosis. She described detecting alarming changes when the warm and engaging personality of her husband began to shift, leading to him missing family events.
“For someone who is very talkative and very engaged, he was just a little more quiet,” she recounted, highlighting how family gatherings became increasingly challenging.
Emma found that Bruce seemed emotionally distant, which was concerning. “It felt a little removed, very cold, not like Bruce, who was very warm and affectionate,” she elaborated, expressing the emotional weight of this drastic change.
Initially, Emma questioned whether Bruce’s health deterioration stemmed from hearing loss he experienced while filming iconic roles. In her retelling, she mentioned, “He wasn’t wearing protective ear covering, and it blew out a big percentage of his hearing.”
This led her to consider whether miscommunication might be a factor in their interactions. Emma expressed her bewilderment during the early stages of the disease, feeling disconnected from the vibrant marriage they once had.
In March 2022, Bruce was reported to be stepping away from his acting career due to a diagnosis of aphasia, which would later be identified as frontotemporal dementia, commonly referred to as FTD.
According to the National Institute on Aging, FTD results from damage to neurons in the brain’s frontal and temporal lobes. Various symptoms may arise, including emotional challenges, communication difficulties, and unusual behaviors.
Emma recalls the overwhelming experience of learning there was no cure for Bruce’s condition.
“To leave there with nothing, just noting a diagnosis I couldn’t pronounce, I didn’t understand what it was … I was so panicked,” she explained, describing that feeling of helplessness as if she were free-falling into uncertainty.
When Sawyer inquired about moments of connection she still experiences with Bruce, Emma’s eyes lit up. “We get moments. It’s his laugh, right? Like, he has such a hearty laugh. And sometimes you’ll see that twinkle in his eye or that smirk. It’s hard to see because as quickly as those moments appear, then it goes,” she said.
Despite the difficulties, she emphasized gratitude for the remaining fragments of Bruce’s vibrant personality, which continue to spark nostalgia and joy.
In September, Emma plans to release her book titled The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path. She dedicated it to Bruce and their daughters, Mabel and Evelyn, aiming to bring awareness to the caregiving experience.
During her interview with Sawyer, Emma read an emotional dedication from her book, fighting back tears. “To Bruce, the heart of my travels, the echo to my footsteps…” she recited, underscoring the deep bond they share.
Emma has been transparent with their daughters about Bruce’s diagnosis, managing their expectations and providing emotional support. She noted that Bruce seems largely unaware of his condition, which adds another layer of complexity to their family dynamic.
“Bruce is still very mobile, Bruce is in great health overall, it’s just his brain that is failing him,” she shared. Emma expressed her belief that he still recognizes her, sharing tender moments as they embrace.
One of the most challenging decisions Emma faced was purchasing a one-story home next to theirs, where Bruce could live with professional caregivers. This adjustment was made with their daughters’ well-being in mind.
“I knew first and foremost Bruce would want that for our daughters. He would want them to be in a home that was more tailored to their needs, not his needs,” she reflected. Emma noted that the new environment has fostered love, warmth, and laughter.
In a poignant moment, Sawyer asked Emma what she would communicate to Bruce if he were able to grasp their situation. Her response showcased the depth of her care and concern: “Just how he’s doing. If he’s OK, if he feels OK. If there’s anything that we could do to support him better,” she said, revealing her desire for open communication.
Emma exemplifies strength and resilience as she navigates the unpredictable journey of caregiving. Through both struggles and moments of joy, her story highlights the profound experience of love and connection in the face of adversity.
