An Iowa highway became the scene of a remarkable rescue, thanks to the quick actions of Rep. Derrick Van Orden, R-Wis., and several bystanders who came together to save the life of an 11-year-old boy following a near-fatal car accident.

While driving through the Hawkeye State en route to visit family on the anniversary of his daughter’s passing, Rep. Van Orden witnessed a minivan collide with a semi-truck in his rearview mirror. Immediately recognizing the gravity of the situation, he turned around to assist and discovered a child suffering severe injuries to his leg and wrist.

In a recent appearance on Fox & Friends First, Van Orden recounted, “I grabbed some socks out of my suitcase to make constricting bands. As others arrived, I asked if anyone had a knife to cut away the seatbelts. With their help, I fashioned two tourniquets, one for his leg and one for his arm, to stop the bleeding.” His quick thinking and resourcefulness were crucial in a dire situation.

The moment the accident unfolded in his view, Van Orden feared the worst. He stated, “I’m just incredibly thankful he survived.” His relief and gratitude were palpable, reflecting a shared sense of hope among the witnesses.

The young victim, identified as Sawyer Whitt, suffered extensive injuries from the crash, including an arterial bleed in his right wrist and deep wounds on his calf. These injuries made his tibia and fibula alarmingly visible, underlining the severity of his condition.

Other bystanders also played vital roles in the rescue. A local farmer contributed by using a windshield wiper as a makeshift splint, while a medic on the scene efficiently crafted a tourniquet using metal. Together, they worked alongside Rep. Van Orden to stabilize Whitt until paramedics arrived.

Van Orden, a retired Navy SEAL with experience as a combat medic, expressed that without their collective intervention, Whitt might not have survived the ordeal. Recognizing the urgent nature of the situation, he stated, “They were just amazing,” in reference to the other heroes at the scene.

He praised the paramedics who arrived approximately 10 to 15 minutes after the accident, calling their actions heroic. Van Orden’s pride in their efforts reflected a deep appreciation for those who serve in emergency roles.

While there were no fatalities reported in this accident, both Sawyer Whitt and the driver of the van were airlifted to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment. Their lives were profoundly impacted by this harrowing turn of events.

In a touching display of gratitude, the Wisconsin lawmaker visited Sawyer in the hospital on the following Monday. During their meeting, Van Orden conveyed his admiration for the young boy, stating, “You’ve got a great future ahead of you.” Such affirmations were meaningful for Whitt, who faced the trauma of his recent experiences.

Van Orden also recounted a poignant exchange with Whitt’s father, who was unaware of the tragic death of Van Orden’s daughter. In the moment, Van Orden expressed, “Sir, our daughter passed two years ago, and I’m very thankful that you don’t have to share that experience.” This humility highlighted the emotional complexities faced by both families, making their brief connection all the more heartfelt.
