Empowering Change: The Inspiring Journey of Devin Howard from Chicago’s South Side

Several years ago, a young man named Devin Howard stepped into my non-profit organization, Project H.O.O.D., located on the South Side of Chicago. Like many youths in our community, Devin faced a harsh environment characterized by violence and poverty. Unfortunately, for individuals in such circumstances, a single wrong decision can have devastating effects. Yet, from the start, Devin displayed a fierce determination to forge his own path.

Devin attended Urban Prep, where he not only played football but also achieved an impressive 3.8 GPA upon graduation. Following this accomplishment, he enrolled at Eastern Illinois University, aspiring to become a nurse. However, as time passed, he realized that college was not the right fit for him and that nursing did not ignite his passion.

In a bold move, Devin returned to his neighborhood, risking his future by re-entering a potentially dangerous environment. He even contemplated joining the Navy, only to back out on the day he was supposed to ship out. Was he destined to become yet another lost soul? Would he uncover his true purpose, or would his surroundings overwhelm him?

Amidst this turmoil, Devin continued searching for direction. When he approached me, his first words were about a carpentry program I offer. I informed him that applications were indeed open, having created this program based on my belief in trades as a viable path forward. I attended college myself, yet I understood it was not suited for everyone. Many individuals dropped out without access to skilled trade opportunities that might provide a second chance.

There’s something truly transformative about working with one’s hands and creating tangible results. While not everyone is drawn to this type of work, society has long neglected the importance of teaching our youth trades. By doing so, we could help them discover pride in their craftsmanship.

Devin immersed himself in the carpentry program, quickly rising to the top of his construction class. His dedication was evident as he never missed a single day. As he piled up certifications, he connected with a man named Bill, the CEO of Reed Construction, who passed him a business card.

Then the pandemic hit, turning the tides of many plans, including Devin’s job search. Faced with the prospect of giving up, he stumbled upon Bill’s card while cleaning his room. Devin decided to leave a voice message, and to his surprise, Bill called him back the very same day, offering him the position of project engineer.

From a boy at risk of falling into gangs, Devin transitioned to a young man nurturing his career aspiration.

Now, he boasts a job that ignites his enthusiasm and builds his future, demonstrating the profound impact of trades on individuals and communities. This significant belief led me to incorporate trades as a vital component of the community center I am currently constructing. It reassures me to see that many others across the United States are beginning to understand the transformative power of trades.

Recently, I tuned in to an interview with TV personality Mike Rowe, where he discussed initiatives in states like New Hampshire, North Dakota, and South Dakota. These regions actively promote the revival of trades in schools, highlighting a renewed interest in shop classes that teach valuable skills such as welding, electrical work, HVAC, plumbing, woodworking, and automotive repair.

I sincerely wish such initiatives would extend to Illinois. Our community faces an overwhelming demand for skilled trades, and rebuilding our trades infrastructure is crucial for a prosperous future.

Not long after Devin secured his position, he received a promotion to project manager. Now, he oversees multiple projects throughout the city. Each time I pass a construction site, I can’t help but wonder if he is managing the work—what an uplifting thought!

Recently, I invited Devin to speak to the graduating class of electricians. His words left a lasting impression on everyone in the room: ‘Poverty ran in my family until it ran into me.’ This powerful statement encapsulates the potential for change and transformation.

In summary, Devin’s journey is a testament to the strength of perseverance and the life-altering opportunities that skilled trades can provide. By investing in our youth through trade education, we can help them break free from cycles of poverty and lead fulfilling, productive lives.
