Israel initiated airstrikes on various locations in Lebanon on Saturday, responding to a rocket attack that claimed the lives of six people. This incident marked the most intense clash since the ceasefire with Hezbollah, the militant group from Lebanon, began nearly four months ago.

The exchange of fire has raised significant concerns regarding the stability of the ceasefire. This development comes just days after Israel reignited its conflict with Hamas, another Iran-backed militant organization, in Gaza. Hezbollah has publicly denied any involvement in the rocket attack, asserting its commitment to the ongoing truce.

In response to the situation, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office directed the military to conduct a robust counteroffensive aimed at multiple targets in Lebanon. The Israel Defense Forces reported that six rockets were launched toward Metula, a border town adjacent to Lebanon. Three of these projectiles crossed into Israeli territory before being intercepted.

New Offensive in Gaza Provoked by Hostage Situation

The Israeli military stated it cannot confirm which group fired the rockets, but they did target Hezbollah command centers and numerous rocket launchers in the response operation. Reports indicate that one of the strikes in the southern Lebanese village of Touline resulted in the deaths of five, including a child, while injuring ten others, with two also being children. The National News Agency of Lebanon reported on these casualties.

Another airstrike later that evening targeted a garage in the coastal city of Tyre, where one individual lost their life and seven others sustained injuries. This marked the first aerial assault in Tyre since the ceasefire took effect on November 27. Additionally, a strike in Hawsh al-Sayed Ali village along the Syrian border wounded five people, as per updates from the NNA.

Lebanon’s Prime Minister, Nawaf Salam, urged the military to take all necessary actions in southern regions but emphasized that the country does not seek to reignite full-scale warfare.

Background leading to these developments traces back to Hezbollah’s rocket, drone, and missile launches into Israel following Hamas’s attack on October 7, 2023. The conflict, which burst into all-out war in September, has seen Israel carry out extensive airstrikes, resulting in the deaths of many senior Hezbollah leaders and significant casualties, with over 4,000 reported deaths in Lebanon and about 60,000 Israelis displaced.

The ceasefire agreement initially called for Israeli forces to withdraw from Lebanese territory by late January. However, this deadline extended to February 18. Despite this, Israeli troops have maintained a presence in five border locations adjacent to northern Israel, continuously conducting airstrikes claiming to target Hezbollah while engaging in drone attacks that have resulted in numerous casualties, including militant operatives.

Lebanon has formally requested the United Nations to exert pressure on Israel to facilitate a complete withdrawal of its forces. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon expressed alarm over the potential escalation of violence and called upon all involved parties to refrain from actions that could jeopardize the progress toward peace.

These latest strikes followed Israel’s declaration that it would intensify military operations in Gaza until Hamas releases 59 hostages, of whom 24 are believed to still be alive.

The situation in Gaza is dire, with Israeli strikes on Friday night leaving at least nine people dead, including three children, according to Al-Ahli Hospital, which reported the somber toll. Eyewitnesses recounted tragic scenes, with families mourning lost loved ones amidst the destruction.

Netanyahu’s foreign policy advisor, Ophir Falk, emphasized that Hamas only comprehends military pressure, reflecting Israel’s strategic stance. The conflict has escalated significantly since the resurgence of hostilities, resulting in over 600 Palestinian deaths since the war’s renewal on Tuesday. Israel has effectively cut off food, fuel, and humanitarian aid to the 2 million Palestinians in Gaza, seeking to apply additional pressure to leverage ceasefire negotiations.

The initial assault conducted by Hamas and affiliated militants resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths, mostly civilian, alongside taking 251 hostages. Many hostages have since been freed through ceasefire negotiations or other agreements, with Israeli forces rescuing eight living individuals while recovering the remains of numerous others.
