The identity of the fan who fell from the right field wall during a Pittsburgh Pirates game has been confirmed. Kavan Markwood, a 20-year-old former college football player, was the individual who plunged more than 20 feet onto the warning track at PNC Park on Wednesday evening.
This shocking incident occurred amidst a game between the Pirates and the Chicago Cubs. Witnesses reported that Markwood flipped over the railing and landed on the field, prompting an immediate response from medical personnel.
Once Markwood hit the ground, play came to a halt as medical staff rushed to his aid. He was found shirtless and motionless on the warning track, with visible blood on his face. Trainers from both teams collaborated with emergency medical services to transport him off the field.
Players from the Pirates and Cubs observed from a distance, some kneeling in concern, as the seriousness of the situation unfolded before them.
The Pittsburgh Public Safety department later stated that the incident is being treated as accidental. By Thursday morning, Markwood was reported to be in critical condition at Allegheny General Hospital.
Those present during the game recounted that Markwood had been celebrating a Pirates rally shortly before his fall, taking off his shirt and pouring beer over himself in a moment of exuberance.
Markwood’s former high school, South Allegheny, confirmed his identity as the fan involved in the incident. He graduated from the school in 2022.
The South Allegheny School District released a supportive statement, reflecting on Markwood’s character. They described him as a hardworking and resilient young man who has made a significant impact on his community. The district emphasized that he remains a well-known figure among students and residents alike.
As stated in the news release from the school, “He’s going to need that resiliency now. He’s touched a lot of lives at South Allegheny. We’re a small community. He’s a household name here.” The district affirmed that Markwood has the prayers and support of the entire community.
Markwood played football for two Division II programs, Walsh University and Wheeling University. In 2023, he appeared in four games for Wheeling University.
Frank Cortazzo, the head football coach at South Allegheny High School, shared his thoughts regarding Markwood’s situation with local media. He highlighted Markwood’s athletic prowess and exceptional character.
Cortazzo stated, “Kavan is not only an outstanding athlete, but an even more exceptional young man. His resilience, heart, and strength are truly unmatched. Please keep him, his family, and his friends in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this challenging time.”
Following the incident, the Pirates organization released a statement expressing concern for Markwood and his family. Andrew McCutchen, a player for the Pirates, also shared his thoughts on X, formerly known as Twitter.
McCutchen, who hit a double shortly before the fall, expressed his regret for the incident and called for support for Markwood. In his message, he said, “Truly hate what happened tonight. I can’t help but think about that guy, his family, and friends. I pray tonight for him. Let us think about his loved ones and hug our families a little tighter tonight. I hope he pulls through. May God bless you all. Good night.”
Once the situation was under control and Markwood had been carted off the field, the Pirates and Cubs resumed play. Ultimately, the Pirates emerged victorious with a final score of 4-3.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the unexpected dangers associated with sports events. The community remains hopeful for Markwood’s recovery as they rally around him during this challenging time.
