Royal experts assert that former Prince Andrew did not renounce his titles out of loyalty to the monarchy, but rather to protect his daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.
Helena Chard, a British broadcaster and photographer, shared her insights with Fox News Digital, explaining that Andrew held onto his titles for as long as possible. However, he ultimately could not allow his daughters to be stripped of their royal titles and privileges, which he fiercely defends.
According to Chard, Andrew’s concern for his daughters’ status within the royal family has always been paramount. He displayed anger when they lost their security detail back in 2011 due to their non-senior royal status. Chard suggests that Andrew will go to great lengths—fighting tooth and nail—to ensure his daughters remain protected amidst the royal fallout. Both Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie will retain their titles despite Andrew’s decision to relinquish his own and vacate Royal Lodge.
Chard provided these comments following a report from the U.K.’s Daily Mail, which revealed that Andrew agreed to abdicate his titles, conditioned on his daughters maintaining their princess status and remaining in the line of succession.
Chard remarked that the sisters would have the opportunity to take on new royal engagements. Beatrice is expected to continue her role as one of the seven Counsellors of State—individuals designated to stand in for the monarch during his absence or illness.
Fox News Digital attempted to reach Buckingham Palace for a response regarding these developments.
On October 30, King Charles III officially stripped Andrew of his royal titles and evicted him from Royal Lodge, following intense pressure over Andrew’s associations with the late Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender.
After separation from Andrew, the former Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, will also face changes as she can no longer use the title. She will need to find a new residence after sharing the 30-room mansion with her ex-husband.
Chard views the deal as a strategic negotiation tactic by King Charles. Despite the turmoil faced by Andrew and Sarah, Chard noted that the royal titles of Beatrice and Eugenie remain intact, allowing them to preserve their public standing.
“King Charles values his nieces and is determined to protect them from unnecessary distress,” Chard stated, emphasizing that this arrangement should provide some relief to both Andrew and Sarah as they consider their daughters’ futures within the royal family.
According to People magazine, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie have remained active in carrying out royal duties. On November 7, Beatrice participated in an event with her uncle, Prince Edward, for Outward Bound, a charity dedicated to introducing children from various backgrounds to nature and outdoor activities. Beatrice, age 37, has taken on the role of deputy patron for the organization.
On November 11, Eugenie engaged with peers during a commemorative event for The King’s Foundation, highlighting the sisters’ commitment to their royal responsibilities.
Ian Pelham Turner, another royal expert, pointed out that Andrew has always been extremely protective of his family. He faced a significant dilemma regarding his daughters’ safety if he remained at Royal Lodge. The commitment to their well-being ultimately prompted him to step back from royal duties.
Hilary Fordwich, a British royal expert, noted that the protection of his daughters became a critical concern for Andrew. He remains vigilant about their futures, contributing to his recent decisions regarding his titles and properties.
Beatrice and Eugenie will continue to hold their royal titles under the Letters Patent established by King George V in 1917. Their status as daughters of a sovereign’s son ensures that they will maintain the styling of Her Royal Highness.
Chard expressed that the ongoing scandal surrounding their father could have affected their reputations within the royal family. Nonetheless, King Charles and Prince William have reaffirmed their support for the princesses, enabling them to engage in charitable initiatives devoid of overshadowing controversies related to Andrew.
She asserted that the sisters’ royal names and titles bolster their charitable endeavors, allowing them to serve effectively while contributing to the royal family’s positive image. Chard concluded by emphasizing the affection and protective instincts that King Charles has for Beatrice and Eugenie, indicating his resolve to secure their futures.
Pressure continues to mount on the palace regarding Andrew’s past affiliations, especially in light of newly unearthed information surrounding Epstein and the allegations made by Virginia Roberts Giuffre, one of Epstein’s accusers. Her posthumous memoir surfaced last month, keeping Andrew’s controversies in the spotlight.
Giuffre has accused Andrew of sexual assault on multiple occasions in 2001, when she was a minor, following trafficking by Epstein and his associate, Ghislaine Maxwell. Although Andrew has continuously denied these allegations, recent emails published by media sources such as The Telegraph and Sky News appear to contradict his claims.
Epstein died in his New York jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on serious sex trafficking charges. Following this, Andrew distanced himself from royal responsibilities after a widely criticized televised interview regarding his association with Epstein.
Maxwell, a well-known socialite, received a lengthy prison sentence in 2021 for facilitating Epstein’s crimes against underage girls. Giuffre passed away in April at the age of 41, deepening the overall tragedy surrounding these events.
Andrew is rumored to relocate to a residence on the king’s Sandringham estate, receiving private financial assistance from King Charles.
Chard cautioned that Beatrice and Eugenie must navigate their royal duties with caution, particularly given their family’s current standing. They should maintain a degree of separation from their parents to safeguard their credibility.
As stress levels rise within the family unit, Chard observed that Sarah has displayed frustration with Andrew’s decisions. However, Andrew feels relieved by the current arrangements, knowing that his daughters remain secure within their royal roles.
