A renowned security expert has praised the exceptional capabilities of Israel’s defense systems, stating they played a critical role in preventing a situation of far greater destruction from ongoing Iranian missile assaults. The evaluation comes amid a wave of ballistic missile strikes targeting the nation.
Dr. Yehoshua Kalisky from the Institute for National Security Studies recently emphasized the extensive destructive potential of Iranian ballistic missiles. He noted that the size, maneuverability, and high velocity of various missiles in Iran’s arsenal pose significant risks. As of Saturday, it was reported that Israel successfully intercepted approximately 95 percent of the ballistic missiles directed at its territory.
Behnam Ben Taleblu, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, estimated that about 20 out of 250 to 300 Iranian missiles launched into Israeli airspace had breached the nation’s defenses by Monday. Furthermore, an additional 20 missiles were fired on Tuesday, with five managing to penetrate the barriers without resulting in fatalities.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that Iran had dispatched over 100 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) against Israel, all of which were intercepted successfully. Taleblu pointed out that these missile barrages align with a pattern established in 2024, highlighting an escalating covert conflict between Israel and Iran that has recently intensified.
Taleblu further asserted that Iran seemed to be doubling down on targeting civilian population centers. This tactic is part of what he describes as counter-value operations aimed at undermining Israel’s resolve to continue its military campaign against Iranian military installations. He reported that there have been at least eight distinct waves of attacks on Israel, noting that the intensity of these barrages appears to be progressively decreasing.
To counter this threat, Kalisky outlined the extensive range of defensive systems that have shielded Israeli citizens. Notably, the introduction of Magen Or, a modern addition to Israel’s defense architecture, employs laser technology to intercept Iranian UAVs effectively. This system is crucial for neutralizing aerial threats quickly and efficiently.
In October 2024, the United States deployed its Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense battery (THAAD) to Israel, accompanied by 100 military personnel for operation support. Kalisky described THAAD’s capabilities, mentioning it can identify targets from 2,500 to 3,000 kilometers away and intercept both short- and medium-range ballistic missiles at altitudes reaching 150 kilometers.
The situation remains precarious, with reports indicating that Iranian strikes have led to significant casualties, including at least 24 Israeli deaths and over 500 injuries due to the barrage of missiles. In addition to using defensive capabilities, Israel has proactively targeted Iranian missile storage sites and launching platforms. As of Monday, IDF officials announced they had destroyed a third of the known Iranian missile launchers.
Taleblu highlighted that as the conflict endures, Iran’s military capabilities will likely diminish. However, he cautioned that this does not negate the inherent dangers posed by such a regime. He pointed out the quality associated with the quantity of Iran’s missile arsenal, stressing that their maneuverability allows these projectiles to inflict damage on civilian centers, leading to both fatalities and significant disruptions to daily life.
In consideration of future actions, Taleblu made a compelling case against allowing Iran, a regime with the largest ballistic missile arsenal in the region, to obtain nuclear capabilities. The systemic flaws in handling such powerful weapons threaten regional stability and security.
Taleblu’s analysis concluded by advocating for a comprehensive understanding of the current military dynamics. The onslaught of missiles from Iran, while met with impressive defensive measures, highlights the urgent need for strategic preparedness and proactive engagement in countering threats to Israel’s sovereignty.
The ongoing conflict serves as a reminder of the volatile nature of regional politics and the importance of advanced defense systems in safeguarding national security.
