Experts Weigh In on Israel’s Groundbreaking Military Operations Against Iran

Israel’s military operations in Iran have reportedly resulted in significant achievements, raising anticipation of a historic shift in regional power dynamics. Analysts tracking the unfolding conflict commend the operation as a culmination of extensive planning, tactical advancements, and sophisticated intelligence operations.

Mark Dubowitz, CEO of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and a prominent authority on U.S. policy towards Iran, characterized the developments as a “resounding military win” for Israel.

He elaborated, stating, “They’ve effectively dominated the Iranian military. Israel has eliminated numerous senior military officials, targeted the Iranian Air Force, and destroyed a substantial number of missile launchers and ballistic stockpiles.” Dubowitz’s assertions reflect a broader sentiment of cautious optimism among military experts.

The Toll of Retaliation: Consequences on Civilians

Despite Israel’s tactical advantages, Iran’s retaliatory measures have inflicted damage on its adversaries. A recent missile strike by Iran targeted the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba, injuring numerous civilians and impacting critical urban areas. However, defense analysts maintain that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) continue to outmaneuver the enemy both strategically and operationally.

Strategic Success Comparisons to Historical Conflicts

Dubowitz drew parallels between Israel’s current military posture and its decisive actions during the Six-Day War in 1967. He observed, “It’s starting to resemble 1967 when Israel dealt devastating blows to five Arab armies. While this operation may extend beyond six days, they are certainly following a similar trajectory.”

Hila Hadad-Hamelnik, a strategist at the Mind Israel think tank and former CEO of the Ministry of Innovation, emphasized that Israel’s current success is no mere happenstance. It is the result of years of methodical preparation across various dimensions, from long-range strike capabilities to a highly evolved intelligence framework.

Hadad-Hamelnik stated, “This is not a campaign conceived just six months ago. Significant groundwork has been laid over the years — in intelligence, weaponry development, and offensive as well as defensive tactical operations. The methods tested in Gaza — swiftly and accurately targeting command structures — were systematically refined and now applied in operations against Iran.”

Lessons from Past Conflicts

She highlighted critical lessons derived from conflicts in Gaza, particularly the necessity of swiftly identifying and neutralizing rocket launchers even prior to commencement of strikes. Hadad-Hamelnik noted, “Our experiences emphasized the importance of neutralizing launchers rather than solely relying on intercepting incoming missiles. This doctrine, honed in the immediacy of Gaza’s battlefield, has been adapted to the complexities of engagements in Iran.”

She stressed Israel’s impressive aerial dominance over Iranian airspace, stating, “The situation is remarkable. The Israeli Air Force operates freely over Iran day after day, with drones asserting control over key regions.”

Defense Mechanisms Under Pressure

Although Iranian missile strikes have successfully penetrated defenses — as illustrated by the recent attack on Soroka hospital — robust interception systems such as Iron Dome and David’s Sling have demonstrated their resilience. These systems maintain a high interception rate, effectively neutralizing more than 90% of attacking missiles despite unprecedented barrages. Hadad-Hamelnik remarked on the effectiveness of these defensive frameworks, stating, “This conflict represents a new scale of warfare, yet our systems are holding strong.”

Persistent Threat from Iran’s Nuclear Sites

Dubowitz, while recognizing substantial successes, pointed out that a pivotal challenge remains: the Fordow nuclear enrichment facility, situated deep within a Revolutionary Guard base and shielded by formidable defenses.

He indicated, “Israel has indeed devastated Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, having removed 14 senior nuclear experts — essentially the architects of Iran’s nuclear program. However, the threat posed by Fordow continues. If left intact, Iran could easily restore its capabilities.”

While Dubowitz refrained from advocating for direct U.S. military engagement, he did assert that diplomatic measures must be taken to dismantle Fordow effectively. He stated, “President Trump should prioritize ensuring that Fordow is completely dismantled. This may involve diplomatic negotiations or targeted military action if Iran remains intransigent.”

Potential Pathways to Resolve the Conflict

He outlined three potential strategies: First, Iran could engage in serious negotiations leading to the dismantling of its nuclear program. Secondly, military strikes could be directed at Fordow. Lastly, a combination of targeted strikes followed by negotiations might be considered. Importantly, any approach must ensure that Iran’s capacity for nuclear armament is permanently eradicated.

Seizing the Opportunity for Change

Hadad-Hamelnik expressed optimism regarding the current situation, stating that Israel’s military accomplishments could provide a unique opening for U.S. intervention. “Given the extraordinary achievements of the IDF, this moment presents clarity. Should the U.S. choose to engage, particularly with Fordow being a vital target and many assets already diminished, the situation could transition from a quagmire to a decisive operation,” she said. She drew a distinct line between this situation and conflicts in Ukraine or Afghanistan, asserting that there lies a clear pathway to success that could reshape U.S. policy.

Dubowitz elaborated that Israel’s military actions have not solely focused on conventional military assets. They have targeted Iran’s internal security mechanisms, impacting state media and the regime’s repressive strategies. This, he noted, could potentially spark a wave of domestic unrest in Iran. He articulated, “We cannot expect protests to emerge while missiles are falling. However, continued strikes at the components of the regime’s repression could create conditions for Iranian citizens to reclaim their space and voice.”

Reflecting on the broader implications of the ongoing military campaign, Dubowitz acknowledged a cautious sense of hope. “I am encouraged to witness justice being served against those responsible for such extensive aggression,” he remarked. “This may represent a pivotal opportunity to decisively address the Iranian nuclear threat while simultaneously supporting the Iranian populace in gaining agency over their future. Real achievements have emerged, but the potential oversight of Fordow could lead to a hollow victory.”
