The dream of gliding through the ocean like a dolphin has become a reality with the CudaJet. Unlike conventional underwater propulsion devices that attach to limbs, the CudaJet is worn like a backpack. This hands-free design allows users to explore beneath the waves with greater freedom and comfort, especially during extended swims.
The journey of the CudaJet began nearly seven years ago. Initially conceived as a prototype named Cuda, this innovative concept sprang from the creative mind of British designer Archie O’Brien during his academic tenure at Loughborough College of Art and Design, now recognized as Loughborough Design School. O’Brien envisioned an underwater jetpack that was lighter and swifter than existing models. In 2023, his ambition materialized with the launch of the first commercially available CudaJet.
Today’s CudaJet comes equipped with several enhancements: an extended battery life, a lighter frame, and updated functionalities. These improvements make the jetpack even more attractive to enthusiasts of underwater adventures.
The CudaJet features a dual-jet-drive system that secures to a padded neoprene harness worn across the torso. Users manage their speed and monitor battery life using a hardwired, trigger-style remote control. One of the most notable upgrades for the 2025 model is its battery life. While the original model offered around 40 minutes of exploration with a 75-minute charge, the new iteration provides a substantial 90 minutes of underwater escapades, effectively doubling the original runtime. This enhancement allows adventurers to delve deeper during a single outing.
The CudaJet can reach depths of up to 131 feet and generates approximately 88 pounds of thrust, equating to a top speed of about 10 feet per second, or roughly 6.7 mph. Although this speed may not seem remarkable on land, the underwater experience transforms it into an exhilarating journey. Remarkably, at 10 feet per second, the drag on the body equals the force experienced when flying through air at nearly 200 mph, delivering a thrilling sensation of power and smoothness.
The 2025 redesign of the CudaJet has also prioritized safety. The jetpack now weighs just over 30 pounds, down from 33, and includes a harness available in four sizes to ensure a snug fit. Each unit ships with a preset safety depth of around 10 feet, adjustable to the maximum of 131 feet for those willing to push boundaries. If a user exceeds their designated safety limit, the motor automatically disengages, allowing the user to float safely to the surface. A full-color display on the controller keeps users informed of their speed, battery status, and depth throughout their underwater journey.
The CudaJet targets a luxury market, appealing to superyacht owners and underwater exploration aficionados seeking unique experiences. Each jetpack is custom-made, hand-finished, and painted in the U.K. The 2025 package starts at approximately $31,000, reflecting an increase from its predecessor. This premium price includes a two-year warranty, a custom hard case, and a rapid charger. For an exclusive touch, the Founder’s Edition offers lifetime product access, in-water training with the creator, and a lifetime warranty, though only 20 units will be made available.
Since each CudaJet is made to order, buyers can anticipate a tailored experience. Customers will engage in a fitting process for the harness and select their desired finishes, all handcrafted in the U.K. This personalized approach means delivery times may vary based on demand and customization options, ensuring that every jetpack is uniquely suited to its owner.
The evolution of the CudaJet from a student project to a fully realized underwater vehicle illustrates the potential of innovative design. Now, it offers a genuine opportunity to traverse ocean depths with ease and excitement. With enhanced battery life, a lighter build, and sophisticated safety features, the CudaJet is an ideal option for individuals eager to elevate their underwater escapades. For those who are passionate about aquatic adventures and ready to invest in something extraordinary, the CudaJet may just be the ultimate thrill-seeking experience.
