Can money buy happiness? This question lingers throughout the new comedy film ‘Good Fortune’ from Lionsgate, featuring Aziz Ansari in a role that reflects the complexities of modern wealth dynamics in today’s economy.
In ‘Good Fortune,’ Ansari plays Arj, a freelance documentary editor navigating the gig economy of Los Angeles. His daily life reveals a struggle for survival. He sleeps in his car and works part-time at a store named Hardware Heaven. To make ends meet, Arj takes on additional gigs as a ‘task sergeant,’ using an app to find temporary jobs. His ability to survive hinges on tips and positive ratings, where anything less feels devastating.
Arj’s journey takes a turn when he meets tech-savvy venture capitalist Jeff, portrayed by Seth Rogen. Initially hired to organize Jeff’s luxurious garage, Arj manages to convince Jeff to extend his role as an assistant. However, their working relationship quickly crumbles when Arj makes an innocent mistake, leading to his dismissal. This twist underscores the fragility of Arj’s precarious existence.
Alongside Arj’s story is that of Gabriel, an unfulfilled guardian angel played by Keanu Reeves. Stuck in a mundane role of saving distracted drivers, Gabriel watches enviously as his fellow angel Azrael experiences fulfillment. Azrael’s commendable efforts involve saving lost souls, contributing to envy in Gabriel, who feels trapped in his minor responsibilities.
When Gabriel saves Arj from a potentially fatal decision, he learns about Arj’s despair. Moved, Gabriel seeks permission from Martha, head of angel management—played by Sandra Oh—to take an active role in rejuvenating Arj’s spirit. Martha, however, urges Gabriel to stick to his assigned duties.
Despite Martha’s warning, Gabriel ventures to help Arj discover the worth of his life. He shares unsettling glimpses of Arj’s future, which include mundane struggles and the prospect of serving as a delivery driver. Feeling despondent, Arj hears Gabriel’s offer to swap lives for a week. Initially skeptical, Arj soon revels in Jeff’s luxurious lifestyle, complete with extravagant parties and gourmet dining.
However, the idyllic surface of Jeff’s life is disturbed when Martha punishes Gabriel for meddling. She strips him of his wings, permitting their restoration only if Arj willingly returns to his former life. Gabriel struggles to adapt to human emotions, even while ensnared in the ramifications of the swap.
Arj’s rich experience continues to separate him from his former life, including his previous connection with Elena, portrayed by Keke Palmer. Elena is another worker in the gig economy, seeking to afford her passion for furniture-making. Unlike Arj, she advocates for better conditions at Hardware Heaven and inspires her colleagues to unionize. Through her struggles, the film contrasts the varied reactions to wealth and hardship.
As Arj becomes increasingly unrecognizable to himself, the important messages about empathy and social responsibility take center stage. Gabriel must learn the nuances of human life while attempting to resolve the chaos created by his misguided intervention.
‘Good Fortune’ shines a light on the diverging experiences of wealth and disenfranchisement in the 21st century. The film approaches its subject matter with humor, refraining from outright condemnation of the wealthy. Instead, it shows Jeff as a flawed character who, while spoiled, does not embody villainy.
Ansari, who wrote and directed ‘Good Fortune,’ has a notable history in comedy, from his role in ‘Parks and Recreation’ to his Emmy-winning series ‘Master of None.’ His return to the director’s chair arrives following a period of personal and professional upheaval during the #MeToo movement, allowing him to reestablish his career.
Ansari’s comedic talents remain evident, though ‘Good Fortune’ does not quite capture the brilliance of his earlier works. Nevertheless, it serves as a valuable addition to his portfolio. Seth Rogen slips comfortably into the role of Jeff, bringing humor and warmth, while Keke Palmer’s performance provides depth to Elena’s character, avoiding pitfalls of preachiness.
Despite some inconsistencies in humor, Reeves’s portrayal of Gabriel elevates the narrative with charm and sincerity, mirroring the difficulties of balancing divine responsibilities and human emotions.
Drawing inspiration from classics like ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ and ‘Trading Places,’ ‘Good Fortune’ combines humor and heartfelt lessons on life’s ups and downs. Ansari’s inaugural directorial effort promises potential for future success in creating films that resonate with audiences.
‘Good Fortune’ is rated R for language and some drug use. The film has a runtime of 1 hour and 38 minutes and is currently playing in theaters.
