Imagine a reality where your texts, purchases, and movements are continuously monitored by a government that never sought your consent. Unfortunately, this scenario is not just a fictional narrative; it is our current situation.
The legacies of the Obama and Biden administrations paved the way for this intrusive landscape. Under their watch, executive branch agencies gained access to our personal data, allowing them to interfere with elections and stifle dissent. This ongoing threat lurks, poised for opportunistic exploitation. President Donald Trump’s initiatives aimed at streamlining data usage across agencies provide a glimmer of hope, but they require stringent transparency and oversight.
The disturbing momentum initiated by previous administrations continues to endanger our privacy. Below are ten alarming methods through which your personal information is harvested, highlighted in my latest book, They’re Coming for You, released by Broadside Books on July 1, accompanied by actionable steps for resistance.
1. The Purchase of Your Data from Brokers. While there are legal limitations on government data collection, the reality is that agencies often sidestep these restrictions by buying your data. They obtain your location history and shopping behaviors from data brokers who profit from your personal information. We can combat this unethical practice by advocating for legislative changes that require warrants for accessing this type of information. Initiatives like the Fourth Amendment is Not for Sale Act could effectively close this loophole.
2. Surveillance on Social Media Platforms. The influence wielded by figures like Barack Obama and Joe Biden over platforms like Facebook and Twitter has resulted in the suppression of conservative voices. Posts labeled as ‘wrongthink’ receive disproportionate penalties. My book calls for necessary reforms, including transparency, oversight, and whistleblower protections, to expose this pervasive influence and restore free speech online.
3. The Abuse of Cell-Site Simulators. During my tenure in Congress, I witnessed firsthand the impact of Stingrays—devices that mimic cell towers to capture individuals’ mobile data without warrants. Agencies such as the IRS frequently exploit these tools. My attempts to curb their use resulted in stalled legislation, including a 2017 bill. Reviving such measures is crucial to counter this governmental overreach.
4. Exploitation of Facial Recognition. Government agencies utilize images from DMV records and social media to engage in surveillance, often targeting protesters without consequence. Demanding a congressional ban on this practice is a necessary step in safeguarding civil liberties.
5. Intrusions into Financial Transactions. Under the Obama and Biden administrations, the IRS and the DOJ were granted sweeping powers to access financial records. In addition, the CDC purchased phone data to enforce controversial lockdowns. It is imperative that we impose warrant requirements and enhance regulatory oversight to prevent this breach of privacy.
6. Monitoring of Health Records. Your medical history, including vaccine statuses, often falls prey to bureaucratic interferences that seek to penalize non-compliance. Backing federal privacy laws along with comprehensive reforms can create a shield for sensitive health information.
7. Collection of Internet Metadata. The NSA’s ability to track online activities like emails and searches poses a significant threat to individual privacy. Supporting legislation such as the Fourth Amendment is Not for Sale Act can put a stop to these invasions of privacy.
8. Misuse of AI and Machine Learning. Systems powered by AI under Biden’s administration have actively suppressed conservative content, predicting dissent before it even arises. It is crucial to dismantle biased algorithms wielded by the government and advocate for more transparent practices.
9. Unchecked Mail Surveillance. Law enforcement’s routine checking of postal mail without scrutiny represents a significant breach of privacy. Advocating for public audits to expose this oversight is essential in restoring trust.
10. Collaboration with NGOs and Corporations. The partnerships formed between certain NGOs and corporations enable the laundering of data on behalf of the deep state, which often includes silencing dissenting views. There is an urgent need to rally support behind Trump’s efforts to sever these problematic alliances.
The shadow cast by the Obama and Biden eras heralds a form of data tyranny characterized by the manipulation of electoral processes and the silencing of opposition. The importance of transparency and robust oversight in Trump’s executive orders aimed at improving data management cannot be overstated.
While I support the intentions behind these reforms—which aim for efficiency and cost savings for taxpayers—failure to ensure openness and accountability fosters an environment ripe for future abuses. Without the implementation of stringent safeguards, including transparency reports and strict data access limits, we risk a revival of past transgressions.
As we move forward, it is vital for citizens to advocate for measures that ensure data serves democracy rather than becoming a tool of oppression. With continued vigilance and the right reforms, we can prevent the deep state from compromising our freedoms.
