Kenneth Cutting Jr. went missing after a night out in downtown Houston in late June 2024. Days later, his body surfaced in Buffalo Bayou, located approximately a mile and a half from where his two roommates last glimpsed him. According to his cousin, Lauren Freeman, the family is perplexed by the circumstances surrounding his death.

Authorities classified the cause and manner of Cutting’s death as undetermined. An autopsy revealed no signs of trauma and a toxicology report did not indicate the presence of drugs.

“Something happened to my son,” Kenneth Cutting Sr. expressed in an interview. “My son didn’t fall into the bayou and drown. He was a strong swimmer.”

Surge in Troubling Deaths

As the community grapples with this latest tragedy, Houston officials are under increasing scrutiny. A total of 16 bodies have been retrieved from the waterways this year alone. Mayor John Whitmire, however, has dismissed allegations of a serial killer, stating that drownings in the bayous are not uncommon and attributing the deaths to factors such as substance abuse and homelessness.

“Unfortunately, when homeless individuals pass away, they often end up in the bayou,” he noted during a recent news briefing.

Freeman responded sharply, calling Whitmire’s remarks indicative of gaslighting. She emphasized that these tragic occurrences have persisted for several years. No response was received from the mayor’s office when inquiries were made.

“It’s absurd to suggest that all of these individuals committed suicide or accidentally drowned in the bayou,” Cutting Sr. stated. “The numbers have been rising significantly over the last three years.”

Details Surrounding Cutting’s Disappearance

Freeman highlighted that her cousin had no history of homelessness or substance abuse. She also referenced the case of another young woman, Jade McKissic, a 20-year-old University of Houston student who was discovered dead in Brays Bayou shortly after disappearing on September 11.

Like Cutting, McKissic left a bar alone and was without her phone at the time of her disappearance. Autopsy results indicated no external signs of trauma, and her body was found approximately 2.5 miles from where she was last seen.

Freeman questioned whether there could be a serial killer operating in the area. She speculated that if foul play is involved, it may be possible that perpetrators are choosing the bayou to dispose of bodies, especially due to the decomposition conditions.

Caught on Camera

Surveillance footage reviewed shows Cutting leaving Pete’s Dueling Piano Bar on June 28, 2024. He can be seen borrowing a phone to make two calls, which were to his own phone that he had misplaced. Moments later, he left in a fit of anger, yelling at a friend.

After a brief reunion with his friends, they reportedly headed away from their home in Katy towards a notoriously dangerous part of Houston. His family received a concerning text from his roommates around 2 a.m. but only saw it upon waking up at 8 that morning.

His roommates claimed that Cutting became agitated and demanded to exit the vehicle, leaving him alone in a risky neighborhood. Subsequently, they recovered his phone, wallet, and shirt, raising further questions about his fate.

Scientific Findings Raise More Questions

Kenneth Cutting Jr. was described as a petite individual, standing 4 feet 10 inches tall and weighing approximately 115 pounds. However, by the time police pulled his remains from the bayou on July 1, he weighed only 89 pounds.

Cutting Sr. voiced his disbelief over the ruling of accidental death, emphasizing that his son understood how to swim and had no reason to venture near the bayou.

Dr. Edward Kilbane, the medical examiner, noted in his report that Cutting showed no signs of trauma, significant natural disease, or commonly abused substances. He also reported finding “orthopedic hardware” in the neck area but could not explain its presence.

Additionally, the autopsy revealed undigested food particles in Cutting’s esophagus, while his stomach was empty. Authorities identified the body using fingerprints.

A Call for Further Investigation

Cutting Sr. revealed that the case lingers heavily on his mind. He earnestly seeks closure and a definitive understanding of what transpired with his son.

The family is appealing to city officials to intensify their investigation into the case.

Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYPD sergeant and criminal justice professor, has taken a keen interest in the increasing number of bodies found in Houston. He urged law enforcement to conduct thorough investigations for each case, irrespective of the possibility of a serial killer.

Giacalone asserted that the mayor’s comments regarding the homeless were misguided and oversimplified. He urged officials to consider other possible motives and sources behind the deaths.

Giacalone also emphasized the importance of encouraging anyone who may have witnessed events on the night of Cutting’s disappearance to come forward. He stressed the need for further investigation, with undetermined cases requiring thorough scrutiny to inform medical examiners’ decisions.
