Family Encounters Rare White Deer While Driving in Iowa

A family captured a unique wildlife moment while traveling home from a birthday celebration.

Kurt Massimilla and his family were making their way back after his son turned 13 when they stumbled upon an extraordinary sight on the back roads of Iowa.

‘We were driving home just as dusk approached when my wife suddenly exclaimed, “An albino deer!”’ Massimilla recounted in an interview with a news agency.

His wife’s excitement mirrored that of a giddy teenager, adding to the thrill of the experience.

The actual identity of the deer remains uncertain as experts debate whether it was truly an albino or a piebald deer. Massimilla described the encounter as extremely rare.

Historically, the chance of witnessing two such animals in one area is about 1 in 400 million, according to Massimilla.

‘At first, I thought it was a white llama or something,’ he added. ‘I hit the brakes and backed up, and sure enough, there were two of them just hanging out in the field.’

Deer exhibiting varying degrees of white fur typically are classified as piebald deer rather than true albinos. True albinos are distinguished by their pink eyes and entirely white coats, a fact noted by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

Piebald deer are considered uncommon, appearing in less than 1% of the total deer population.

These peculiar deer are also referred to as leucistic, exhibiting partial pigmentation loss that results in white coloration along with patches or spots on their fur.

The National Park Service clarifies that leucism differs from albinism since it does not affect the pigmentation of the eyes.

Massimilla and his family recently relocated from Arizona to Iowa, sparking their interest in local wildlife. ‘We’re passionate about wildlife, so discovering animals that are typically elusive adds to our new adventure,’ he shared.
