The family of a father-to-be, whose girlfriend allegedly caused a car crash in Florida, has expressed their thoughts through legal representatives. They conveyed their satisfaction with the charges filed against her, indicating a sense of justice amid tragic circumstances.
Leigha Mumby, a 24-year-old, faces allegations of vehicular homicide following the incident that resulted in the death of 22-year-old Daniel Waterman. Waterman was a passenger in the vehicle driven by Mumby in Flagler County, Florida, earlier this year when the car collided on the interstate.
Waterman sustained life-threatening injuries and succumbed to those injuries on October 8, as reported by FOX35 Orlando. According to law enforcement, Waterman communicated with officers from his hospital bed, alleging that Mumby intentionally crashed the car. He reportedly stated, “I don’t care what happens. You’ll get what you deserve,” just before the incident.
John Hager, the attorney representing Waterman’s family, emphasized the grievous nature of the situation. He noted that while there may be no clear winners, the family’s feelings toward the legal process are positive. Hager remarked, “There are no real winners in this situation. It’s a terrible, horrible situation, and the fact that these charges were filed, I think were right and just, and the family is satisfied with how the State Attorney’s office in Flagler County has been working diligently and is satisfied with the current charges being filed.”
In an interview with Syracuse.com, Waterman’s mother shared that her son had been in a coma for a period. He eventually regained enough consciousness to provide details about the crash, which were crucial for the investigation.
Waterman’s grandfather, Michael Gilman, shared harrowing details of the injuries sustained. He revealed that Waterman suffered a broken neck, broken back, multiple broken collarbone fractures, dislocated hips, and fractures in his leg and ankle. Gilman stated, “He broke everything. It wasn’t much, not broken. He was scratched up all over the place.”
Mumby was initially arrested in July, facing charges of reckless driving causing serious bodily injury and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. She entered a plea of not guilty regarding those charges.
However, following Waterman’s subsequent death, prosecutors elevated the charges against Mumby to vehicular homicide earlier this week. Following the new charges, she was remanded to the Flagler County Jail but was later released after posting a bond of $150,000.
An obituary for Waterman, published on Syracuse.com, described him as someone who “left this world on October 8th, far too soon following a tragic act of violence.” The heartfelt tribute highlighted his struggle to overcome the injuries he received in the accident.
“Daniel passed away after courageously fighting for eight months from injuries sustained in a crash,” the obituary stated. “He was an excited, soon-to-be father of a baby girl. He wanted nothing more than to come home to her and to the family who loved him so dearly.”
The piece paid tribute to Waterman’s passions, noting his love for basketball. His family recalled that he could often be found on the basketball court, where his enthusiasm and drive shone brightly. They reflected on his strength, determination, and contagious energy, which left a lasting impression on everyone around him.
As the case unfolds, the impact of this tragic accident remains profound, serving as a sobering reminder of the realities of reckless behavior on the road. Families affected by such incidents often seek closure and accountability, hoping for justice amidst their grief. In moments like these, the importance of safe driving practices becomes even more evident, as the ripple effects of a single decision can ripple through countless lives.
