“I’m praying to the Lord that he is protected, and I pray that they don’t try to kill him,” Jasmine Groves told FOX 8 New Orleans. Her worries stem from Groves’s past experiences in prison, where he endured three stabbings. She also highlighted the inadequacies in the staffing at the correctional facility that might have enabled the escape.
The family felt a greater sense of security when Groves was imprisoned at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, underscoring the fear they now have regarding his safety amid the ongoing manhunt.
“Just think about how horrible Orleans Parish Prison must be if you have more peace of mind knowing he is at Angola,” she added.
Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams also voiced his concern, revealing his unease following media reports about Groves’s involvement in the jailbreak.
Staffing Issues at Orleans Parish Jail
The escape has raised significant questions regarding the operational capacity of the Orleans Parish jail. Several inmates, many facing serious charges, were held in minimum-custody units during the escape. “I am grateful to the community, our law enforcement partners, and city and state leaders for aiding us in capturing the remaining escapees,” Hutson expressed.
The sheriff added she took immediate actions post-incident, which included suspensions and a recent arrest related to the jailbreak. She emphasized the necessity for enhanced resources for the Orleans Justice Center to ensure better management of the facility.
Investigation Intensifies
A thorough investigation is underway concerning the systemic failures at the jail, with three individuals accused of aiding in the escape. Among those arrested is jail employee Sterling Williams, 33, alongside Louisiana residents Cortnie Harris, 32, and Corvanntay Baptiste, 38.
Authorities have warned that anyone found helping the escapees will face charges as accomplices. To incentivize information leading to the capture of the remaining escapees, the FBI is offering rewards up to $5,000, while Crime Stoppers has rolled out a reward of $2,000 for each inmate.
Currently, law enforcement agencies are collaborating in a concerted effort to locate the five men still on the run. A specialized violent offender warrant squad, along with resources from the FBI and U.S. Marshals, is spearheading the rigorous search operations.
