Shedeur Sanders’ unexpected drop from a projected first overall pick to 144th in this year’s NFL Draft has left many fans in disbelief. As a consequence, one staunch supporter has decided to take legal action.
An anonymous fan has initiated a $100 million lawsuit against the NFL based on Sanders’ dramatic fall in the draft ranking. The plaintiff, who identifies as a Georgia native and a dedicated fan of the University of Colorado, where Sanders played, has made allegations that statements were leaked suggesting Sanders performed poorly in interviews and displayed an arrogant demeanor. These narratives, according to the lawsuit, severely tarnished Sanders’ reputation and undermined his draft potential.
The lawsuit claims violations of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, arguing that racial discrimination may have played a significant role in the decisions surrounding Sanders’ draft prospects.
“The decisions made regarding Sanders may have been influenced by racial discrimination, violating his rights as a player,” the lawsuit states. This assertion comes amidst a heated debate over racial biases in sports, especially as Sanders’ slide sparked discussions on various social media platforms.
Prominent figures, including former Democratic U.S. Representative Jamaal Bowman, have suggested that Sanders’ draft slide reflects broader societal issues, asserting that America has a fear of strong Black men. Meanwhile, ESPN host Stephen A. Smith and Barstool founder Dave Portnoy engaged in a public discourse regarding the implications of these events.
Interestingly, this year’s first overall pick was also a Black quarterback, Cam Ward, raising questions about the narrative surrounding Sanders specifically. Over the last three years, all players taken first in the NFL draft have been Black quarterbacks, indicating a complicated landscape regarding representation in professional football.
Despite the intense scrutiny, the plaintiff claims to have suffered from what he describes as intentional infliction of emotional distress. The lawsuit articulates that the emotional toll stemming from the NFL’s actions and negative statements resulted in considerable psychological harm and disappointment as a loyal fan.
The suit details, “The NFL’s actions and the dissemination of slanderous statements have caused severe emotional distress and trauma to the plaintiff, resulting in frustration, disappointment, and psychological harm as a fan. The NFL may have engaged in unfair practices by misrepresenting the nature of the drafting process and the qualifications of players.” As a result, the lawsuit seeks significant monetary compensation.
Fox News Digital reached out to the NFL for a response regarding the allegations and the ongoing lawsuit but has not received a comment at this stage.
Before the draft took place, NFL Media circulated a report detailing the top 18 prospects in this year’s class. Within the report, anonymous sources conveyed negative opinions regarding Sanders, with one assistant coach describing an interview as the worst he had ever experienced. He expressed concerns about Sanders being entitled, taking unnecessary sacks, displaying poor body language, and blaming teammates.
Additionally, another executive remarked that the interview lacked a positive trajectory, noting that Sanders sought to dictate the terms of the process, making interviewers feel belittled. However, it should be noted that neither Sanders nor his family have publicly echoed these criticisms or concerns regarding the draft process.
Ultimately, Sanders was selected in the fifth round by the Cleveland Browns and is now expected to battle for the starting quarterback position against fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, who was drafted earlier in the third round. In a recent announcement, the team revealed that Sanders would don the jersey number 12.
