Federal authorities have apprehended a former military service member wanted for his alleged involvement in a shooting incident directed at officers at an ICE detention center in Texas. The arrest took place on Tuesday afternoon, marking the end of an 11-day manhunt.
According to the FBI Dallas Field Office, 32-year-old Benjamin Song was captured in Dallas following a coordinated investigation.
On July 4, Song reportedly participated in a group attack involving 10 to 12 individuals targeting officers at the Prairieland Detention Center located in Alvarado, Texas. While authorities managed to arrest ten assailants at the scene, Song successfully evaded capture.
Special Agent in Charge R. Joseph Rothrock of the FBI Dallas Field Office stated, “The FBI has worked tirelessly to arrest everyone associated with the shooting at the Prairieland Detention Center. We appreciate the collaboration from all agencies that assisted in locating Benjamin Song.”
Rothrock emphasized the commitment to public safety, stating, “His arrest is a testament to our determination to protect not only the community but also our law enforcement partners, who were the targets of this coordinated attack. The FBI will not tolerate violence against law enforcement and will pursue those responsible for such acts.”
Prior to Song’s arrest, the FBI had offered a reward of $25,000 to the public for information leading to his arrest and conviction.
Song, who previously served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a reservist, faces serious charges following the shooting incident. According to a criminal complaint obtained by Fox News Digital, he is accused of firing two AR-15-style rifles at both two correctional officers and an Alvarado police officer.
Reports indicate that the Alvarado police officer suffered a neck gunshot wound inflicted by a suspect lurking in the nearby woods. Concurrently, another shooter reportedly unleashed a barrage of rounds towards unarmed correctional officers who had ventured outside the facility.
Currently, Song faces three counts of attempted murder of a federal officer, along with three counts of discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. These charges highlight the severity of the alleged actions taken during the incident.
