Last week, the FBI apprehended Sean Gardner, a 38-year-old gymnastics coach, on a federal child pornography charge. This arrest follows a suspension from his position at Chow’s Gymnastics and Dance Institute in West Des Moines, Iowa, stemming from allegations of sexual abuse that surfaced more than three years ago.

Allegations of Sexual Abuse Surface

Court records obtained by The Associated Press reveal that Gardner stands accused of sexually abusing at least three young gymnasts at Chow’s. Additionally, he allegedly recorded young athletes undressing at his previous employment at Jump’In Gymnastics & Tumbling in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Chow’s Gymnastics is renowned as the training ground for U.S. gymnastics champions Shawn Johnson and Gabby Douglas, both of whom clinched gold medals at the Olympic Games.

A Coach’s Aspirations and Promotion

In 2019, Gardner expressed in an interview with the ABC affiliate WOI-TV that working at Chow’s was his “dream job.” He praised the gym’s culture, describing it as “amazing” and “beautiful.”

A year later, he received a promotion to director of Chow’s Winter Classic, an annual gymnastics meet that attracts over 1,000 participants to Iowa. During his four years at Chow’s, Gardner also coached a junior Olympics team and guided several students toward college gymnastics scholarships. However, he aimed for more, emphasizing the importance of leaving a lasting impact on his athletes.

Inappropriate Behavior Reported

In March 2022, a young girl reported to SafeSport that Gardner employed “inappropriate spotting techniques,” allegedly placing his hands between her legs. Furthermore, the affidavit indicated that he would question athletes about their sexual activity, derogatorily labeling them with terms like “idiots,” “sluts,” and “whores.” These incidents are said to have begun following his hiring in 2018 and persisted until the girl departed the gym in 2020. She also provided investigators with the names of six other potential victims.

Emerging Allegations and Investigation Developments

In April 2024, yet another former athlete from Chow’s approached the West Des Moines Police Department, reporting allegations of abuse. This prompted the filing of another affidavit, which is now sealed and signed by Police Detective Jeff Lyon.

As the investigation progressed, Gardner was remanded to Polk County Jail in Des Moines. He is slated to be extradited to Mississippi to face charges there, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals Service.

Evidence Seized by Investigators

In late May, law enforcement retrieved a cellphone, a laptop, and a desktop computer from Gardner’s possession, alongside handwritten notes exchanging communications between him and former students, as detailed in court documents.

Moreover, investigators discovered a troubling cache of images featuring minors aged approximately 6 to 14 years old, captured while using the toilet or changing into leotards. These images appear to have been obtained through a hidden camera located in a restroom.

The FBI affidavit details the retrieval of around 50 video files and 400 photographs, including some classified as child pornography. A particularly alarming video reportedly shows Gardner entering a bathroom and turning off a camera.

Additionally, authorities uncovered footage of an adult woman secretly recorded entering and exiting a bathtub. She has been identified as Gardner’s ex-girlfriend. Both Gardner’s ex and the gym’s owner, Candi Workman, informed investigators that these images likely originated from Jump’In Gymnastics’ facility in Purvis, Mississippi.

Legal Proceedings and Consequences

During a court appearance in Des Moines, Gardner faced charges relating to the creation of visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. This charge carries potentially severe penalties, with a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.
