On Monday, federal authorities made significant progress in tackling gang violence in Texas by arresting 16 individuals linked to the Anti-Tren gang. This operation marks the largest crackdown on Anti-Tren members to date, occurring amid ongoing conflicts with the notorious Venezuelan prison gang Tren de Aragua.
According to the Justice Department, 14 of the arrested gang members face serious charges of conspiracy to possess and distribute over 5 kilograms of cocaine. Meanwhile, two others are under separate charges related to firearms offenses, specifically linked to the illegal possession and trafficking of weapons.
FBI Houston Special Agent in Charge Douglas Williams highlighted the scale of this operation. He expressed, “These arrests represent the most significant takedown of suspected Anti-Tren members and associates by the FBI thus far, right here in Houston.” Williams emphasized that the arrested individuals are believed to be involved in an ongoing turf war with members of Tren de Aragua, as well as numerous violent incidents in the region, including a mass shooting at a Houston sports bar that left six people injured.
Legal documents detail that the Anti-Tren gang primarily consists of former members of Tren de Aragua, and it is recognized for its relationship with drug trafficking and violent turf disputes.
U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei addressed the dual priorities of the Southern District, stating, “Our goals are border security and the eradication of violent crime. This case connects both aspects.” He elaborated that Operation Take Back America focuses on proactively combating transnational criminal organizations to protect community safety.
Should the suspects be convicted of the drug-related charges, they could face life sentences along with potential fines reaching $10 million. Notably, the members charged with separate firearm offenses might receive up to 15 years in prison upon conviction.
Among those arrested was 25-year-old Jose Miguel Briceno, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela residing in Houston, who faces additional charges for unlawful possession of ammunition by an alien. Briceno’s involvement in a mass shooting at the Latinas Sports Bar in Houston in March is also under scrutiny, where several patrons were critically injured.
Briceno allegedly fired a weapon inside the bar and disposed of the firearm afterward. Although law enforcement has yet to recover the gun, he may face a maximum sentence of 15 years and fines of up to $250,000 if found guilty.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office is cooperating with the Department of Justice’s Joint Task Force Vulcan (JTFV), which has been operational against gangs like MS-13 and expanded its focus to include Tren de Aragua under Attorney General Pam Bondi’s guidance.
The recent arrests are a part of Operation Take Back America, which represents a nationwide effort by the Department of Justice. The initiative aims to counter illegal immigration, dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and safeguard communities against violent offenders, according to the Justice Department.
