FIRST ON FOX: A high-ranking source within the FBI has dismissed recent reports suggesting significant internal strife between the FBI and the National Counterterrorism Center regarding files linked to the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.

The National Counterterrorism Center is a component of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which plays a crucial role in coordinating counterterrorism intelligence across various federal agencies.

Director Joe Kent of the NCTC has looked into the assassination case, reportedly causing friction with leadership within the FBI. This included Director Kash Patel, who allegedly felt that Kent was overstepping his bounds and complicating the ongoing investigation against the 22-year-old suspected assassin, Tyler Robinson, according to sources.

Despite the tensions reported, the insider told Fox News Digital that claims of serious disputes between the agencies and their leaders are greatly exaggerated.

FBI and ODNI: A Unified Front

In a joint statement, both the FBI and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence emphasized their collaborative efforts, along with federal lawmakers, to strengthen national counterterrorism strategies.

They declared, “The ODNI and the FBI are united in working with Congress to enhance our nation’s counterintelligence efforts to protect the safety, security, and freedom of the American people.” This assertion underscores their commitment to a cohesive approach in addressing threats.

As Kent investigated potential connections to extremist groups, including Antifa, it appears Patel expressed concerns over his probing actions. This led to a noteworthy meeting at the White House involving key officials, including Vice President JD Vance.

Charges Against Tyler Robinson

Robinson faces multiple charges in Utah, including aggravated murder, which could lead to the death penalty. Although he has not yet been charged with any federal crimes, the possibility of Justice Department involvement looms large.

Typically, both the DOJ and FBI maintain a policy of limited public commentary on ongoing investigations to prevent any potential prejudice against future prosecution. Nonetheless, insiders expressed worries that exploring potential additional suspects or terrorism-related connections could inadvertently aid the defense.

Another complication arises from concerns that officials at the NCTC discussing the case publicly could offer less protective measures than the FBI or DOJ, potentially jeopardizing the investigation.

Legal Experts Weigh In

Legal analysis from professionals like defense attorney Donna Rotunno suggests that any discussion about additional suspects would not significantly aid the defense in Robinson’s case.

“I don’t think this would help the defense in any way,” Rotunno stated. “If the agencies didn’t do this, the defense would criticize them for conducting an incomplete investigation.” She argues that uncovering other suspects would not eliminate the allegations that Robinson was the shooter.

Linda Kenney Baden, a well-known legal analyst and defense attorney, also pointed out that Robinson’s defense strategy seems geared more towards avoiding the death penalty rather than proving his innocence. She remarked, “Assuming they found he was manipulated by an external group…so what? It doesn’t help his defense.”

Baden drew historical parallels to past assassinations, such as that of President John F. Kennedy, suggesting that having outside influences does not absolve an individual from accountability.

Little response has come from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence regarding requests for further comments.

The Circumstances of the Assassination

Charlie Kirk was fatally shot around 12:20 p.m. on September 10 while addressing a crowd at Utah Valley University during a Turning Point event. Authorities apprehended Robinson 33 hours later, over 200 miles from the scene, after his family and a minister persuaded him to surrender.

A task force comprised of investigators from various agencies is diligently working to identify additional suspects and collect evidence, ruling out other persons of interest. They have gathered evidence ranging from campus surveillance footage to phone data, as well as the suspected murder weapon found near the university.

Authorities initially detained George Zinn, a 71-year-old local who falsely claimed to be the shooter. Zinn now faces serious charges of obstruction and sexual exploitation of a minor due to disturbing content discovered on his phone.

Investigators have also looked into at least two other potential persons of interest, although they were not subsequently charged with any crime. No formal charges have been made against individuals Robinson allegedly confessed to, including his roommate and a group of friends from the social platform Discord.
