The FBI has announced a reward of $20,000 for information that leads to the re-capture of a former Arkansas police chief, Grant Hardin. This man is currently a fugitive after escaping from prison on May 25. Hardin, known as “the Devil in the Ozarks,” is serving a lengthy sentence for serious offenses, including murder and rape.
On the afternoon of May 25, Grant Hardin, 56, fled from the North Central Unit, a medium-security prison located in Calico Rock, Arkansas. Reports from the Arkansas Department of Corrections (ADC) indicate that Hardin was able to escape without detection.
The FBI has launched an extensive manhunt, collaborating with U.S. Marshals and state law enforcement agencies. According to the FBI’s Little Rock Field Office, they are employing all available resources to locate Hardin.
Authorities believe Hardin may have ties to several communities, including Garfield, Eureka Springs, Holiday Island, and Huntsville. These connections could aid him in evading capture, as he may receive assistance from individuals in these areas.
Former FBI agent Rob D’Amico expressed concerns about Hardin’s background as a police chief, suggesting it increases his ability to remain on the run. D’Amico stated, “He knows how law enforcement operates. He understands how they follow leads and conduct surveillance, which makes him a more challenging target to apprehend.”
Unmanned cabins and sheds in the wooded regions surrounding Stone County present potential hiding spots for the escapee. Rand Champion, the ADC Communications Director, indicated that law enforcement officials believe they have a solid understanding of the route Hardin may have taken during his escape. Despite this, they acknowledge that he could have moved quickly and could now be anywhere.
Authorities have established a perimeter in Stone County, confident that Hardin remains nearby. Champion highlighted, “All it takes is one vehicle for him to travel out of the area. As of now, officials believe he is still close by, but they urge the public to remain vigilant.”
Champion also cautioned residents, advising them to consider Hardin as a very dangerous individual with the potential to commit additional crimes while he is evading capture.
The rapid response of prison officials was evident when they noted Hardin’s absence within a brief 30-minute timeframe. Social media posts from the Stone County Sheriff’s Office revealed images of Hardin wearing a prison-style uniform during his escape. However, Champion clarified that the outfit was not an official prison uniform.
Hardin is serving a 30-year sentence for the murder of James Appleton, a city water employee who was brutally shot in 2017. During the booking process, his DNA was compared to a database, linking him to a cold case involving the rape of a teacher in 1997. Hardin pleaded guilty to that offense in 2019 as well.
The escape of Hardin coincides with a recent surge in prison break incidents, including a significant escape of ten inmates from a facility in New Orleans just days prior. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and remain committed to securing the recapture of those on the run.
Grant Hardin is described as a 6-foot tall white male, weighing approximately 259 pounds. The FBI encourages individuals with any information related to his whereabouts to call 1-800-CALL-FBI. Each tip could be crucial in resolving this urgent manhunt.
Community Vigilance is Key
The public can play an instrumental role in ensuring community safety. Authorities urge people to remain alert and report any suspicious activities. With ongoing efforts from law enforcement, capturing Hardin quickly remains a top priority in Arkansas and surrounding states.
