The recent announcement by the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding the arrest of 34 individuals has sent shockwaves through the sports community. High-profile figures such as Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier find themselves embroiled in a substantial investigation into an illegal gambling operation. Former NBA guard Damon Jones is also among the notable figures implicated in this scandal.
During a press conference held in New York on Thursday, FBI Director Kash Patel shed light on the investigation’s ties to the notorious La Cosa Nostra crime families. Patel emphasized that the illicit gambling scheme, alongside sports rigging operations, has been under scrutiny for several years.
He stated, “Not only did we crack into the fraud that these perpetrators committed on the grand stage of the NBA, but we also entered and executed a system of justice against La Cosa Nostra, which includes the Bonanno, Gambino, Genovese, and Lucchese crime families.” This remark highlights the extensive reach and depth of the investigation, indicating that it extends far beyond the basketball courts.
Patel also praised the courageous effort of prosecutors who are determined to address such criminal activities at various levels. He asserted, “We will not allow this kind of illicit activity to happen, not only at the national sporting level, but also where it hides in La Cosa Nostra.” The director’s statements underscore the historic nature of the fraud involving not just money but also deceitful schemes that victimized many, including instances of cryptocurrency fraud.
U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Joseph Nocella provided further clarity on the matter by announcing two indictments connected to fraud. The first indictment focuses on illegal sports betting, while the second pertains to rigged poker games.
Nocella revealed, “These defendants, including former professional athletes, used high-tech cheating technology to steal millions of dollars from victims in underground poker games that were secretly fixed.” He detailed how the games, which took place in locations such as the Hamptons, Las Vegas, Miami, and Manhattan, had ties to the Bonanno, Gambino, and Genovese crime families.
