The FBI has released a compelling new surveillance video on X, showcasing previously unseen footage of the suspect responsible for planting pipe bombs near the headquarters of the Democratic and Republican National Committees in Washington, D.C. The announcement comes as authorities re-emphasize a $500,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of this individual.
In a statement shared on X, the FBI highlighted the ongoing investigation, stating, “We are committed to identifying the person who placed pipe bombs at the offices of the Democratic National Committee and Republican National Committee on January 5, 2021.” The agency also mentioned that this updated release includes higher-quality footage as well as longer clips detailing the movements of the subject.
The new video meticulously traces the suspect’s movements on the evening prior to the Capitol riot, showing an individual carrying a backpack while planting bombs outside both party headquarters between 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. The suspect seems to vanish from view in the heart of Washington, D.C., shortly thereafter.
According to the FBI, the suspect stands approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall. They were spotted wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, black gloves, and distinctive Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes featuring a yellow logo. The individual could be seen covering their face with a mask while managing the explosive devices hidden in a backpack.
The FBI timeline reveals that the suspect walked through various Capitol Hill neighborhoods between 7:34 p.m. and 8:18 p.m. Their first appearance caught on video occurred near 1st Street and North Carolina Avenue SE. Shortly thereafter, the suspect halted briefly on South Capitol Street to set down a backpack believed to contain one of the devices.
A critical moment captured in the footage shows the suspect sitting on a bench outside the DNC headquarters. It was around 7:54 p.m. when the first explosive device was planted. The individual then proceeded to the RNC headquarters, where the second device was placed at approximately 8:16 p.m. before they disappeared from the surveillance camera’s view.
In January, the FBI intensified its focus on this unsolved case by unveiling additional video footage of the suspect. In a public appearance in May, FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino expressed confidence that the agency was closing in on suspects involved in this event.
Authorities report an extensive investigative effort has taken place, involving hundreds of leads, the review of thousands of video files, and over 1,000 interviews conducted thus far. Bongino also emphasized the vital role of public engagement in the investigative process. He mentioned that social media is an invaluable resource for generating new leads in cases like this.
Although the pipe bomb incident in 2021 resulted in no injuries, authorities have noted that the attack had the potential to be deadly. Notably, then-Vice President-elect Kamala Harris was present inside the DNC’s offices when the pipe bomb was discovered. Additionally, then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi passed by the location shortly before the explosive was safely removed by law enforcement.
The FBI maintains that community participation is essential for across-the-board crime investigations. Many unsolved cases can find resolution when the public steps forward with information. The released footage aims not only to attract attention to this particular case but also to engage the community in collaborative efforts to enhance safety measures and reduce crime.
As the investigation progresses, officials remind the public of the critical need for vigilance. Anyone with additional information regarding the identity or whereabouts of the suspect is encouraged to come forward, contributing to the collective push towards justice.
The release of the footage highlights the FBI’s ongoing commitment to solving this case and underscores the importance of timely action in criminal investigations. As more details emerge and footage circulates, the hope remains that the suspect will soon be identified.
