Nicole Georgas, a mother from Illinois, brought this critical issue to light by filing a civil rights complaint with the Justice Department. She claims that school officials pressured her 13-year-old daughter to change clothes in front of a transgender student in the girls’ locker room last month.

Georgas revealed her concerns during a recent Deerfield Public School District 109 Board of Education meeting. She stated that the incident took place when her daughter refused to change due to the presence of a biological male student in the locker room during physical education.

During her passionate speech, Georgas highlighted the importance of privacy and mental health for her daughter and other young girls. “The girls want their locker rooms and bathrooms back. They want their privacy back. My daughter’s well-being is at stake,” she said, underscoring the emotional toll this incident has caused.

After the incident on February 5, Georgas reported that her daughter felt frightened and distressed upon encountering a transgender student in the girls’ bathroom. She claimed her daughter received a troubling explanation from school administrators, stating that the student was permitted to utilize the girls’ facilities based on their gender identity.

Georgas subsequently raised her concerns with the school administration. She argued that this situation contradicts President Trump’s executive order designed to keep biological males out of women’s sports. According to Georgas, the administration defended its decision by citing advice from their legal team that permitted the transgender student access to both the girls’ restroom and locker room.

In response to the allegations, Deerfield Public Schools District 109 released a statement to clarify their position. They asserted that no student is obligated to change in front of others in the locker room settings. Furthermore, the district emphasized that their practices comply with state laws and educational guidelines.

“District 109 is dedicated to fostering an educational environment where every student and staff member feels respected and supported. Our policies regarding locker room usage align with Illinois state law, the Illinois School Code, and guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education. No middle school student is required to change their gym uniform in view of others, as all students have multiple options for changing privately if they choose,” the statement read.
