U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth has acted decisively to block mass layoffs at Voice of America, expressing strong disapproval of Kari Lake’s handling of the situation. Lamberth’s ruling indicates that the actions of the Trump administration could warrant civil contempt proceedings, should the plaintiffs choose to pursue such a course.
In a detailed 19-page ruling, Judge Lamberth put a stop to the planned reductions in force at the U.S. Agency for Global Media. He issued a warning that these cuts would undermine the organization’s ability to fulfill its legal obligation to deliver accurate and reliable news coverage.
Lamberth outlined numerous infringements, including legislative violations where Voice of America attempted to cease essential language services despite explicit directives from Congress to maintain them. This disregard for statutory requirements raises significant concerns about the agency’s future effectiveness.
Moreover, the judge pointed out that Voice of America had drastically reduced its radio offerings, shrinking its output to a mere 30-minute daily program broadcast in Dari and Pashto. This reduction has left critical gaps in coverage for key regions, including areas like North Korea and China, where information dissemination remains vital.
Kari Lake came under further scrutiny during the proceedings. She admitted under oath that she had not deliberated carefully whether Africa qualifies as a significant region under the law, which raises questions about the agency’s strategic planning regarding international news coverage. Additionally, she acknowledged that no programming was being produced specifically for South America, further illustrating potential oversight in meeting diverse global demands.
Judge Lamberth did not shy away from criticizing the Trump administration, suggesting they misled the court regarding the reduction in force. He indicated it was difficult to accept the assertion that the layoffs were uncertain when clear evidence indicated they were already underway.
The notices for the layoffs extended to employees of both Voice of America and the U.S. Agency for Global Media, and Lamberth dismissed the government’s efforts to exempt non-VOA personnel from the impending reductions.
Further condemning the actions taken, Lamberth accused Lake and her administration of openly disregarding Congressional mandates. He characterized their behavior as a
