Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi has announced the filing of federal murder charges against three individuals linked to the notorious MS-13 gang. This significant development relates to the brutal killing of Gerson Vilelio Vasquez-Portillo, a 22-year-old man whose murder occurred in 2015 in western Palm Beach County. Authorities believe Vasquez-Portillo was associated with a rival gang.

The charges come as part of extensive cold-case investigations into several homicides, with four murders occurring throughout 2014 and 2015 in the vicinity of Broward County. One case, potentially more chilling than the rest, involved a victim who suffered 100 stab wounds before being shot in the head.

Details of the Arrests

During a press conference, Bondi underscored the seriousness of the situation, emphasizing that the alleged gang members had thought they had evaded justice for nearly a decade. “These gangs are organized. They are terrorists. And look at these guys, they thought they got away with it,” Bondi stated emphatically, adding, “They are living among us because they think they can get away with this, and they cannot.”

Among those arrested is Hugo Adiel Bermudez-Martinez, who was taken into custody in Minnesota. The other two suspects, Jose Ezequiel Gamez-Maravilla and Wilber Rosendo Navarro-Escobar, were apprehended in Florida. Bondi further indicated that her office is reviewing the cases to determine whether the death penalty will be sought. She warned gang members: “If you are a gang member living in this country, I’d self-deport right now because we’re coming after you.”

The recent arrests fell under a multi-agency operation dubbed Operation Sombra De La Bestia, or Operation Shadow of the Beast. This operation brought together various law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida and the Broward Sheriff’s Office, to tackle gang violence head-on. Another victim, Omar DeJesus Gutierrez, also just 18, was shot after allegedly signaling gang signs, demonstrating the gang’s predisposition for violence, even against individuals who are not part of their ranks, as court documents affirm.

Chrislet Ondina, aged 25, lost her life in October 2015 as part of a gang initiation rite, further illustrating the brutal practices that define MS-13. This pattern of violence is alarming, with suspects Tirado-Silva and Cruz-Ortiz implicated in three of the murders, while Tovar was linked to two. Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony commented on the severity of gang violence, stating, “Justice does not have an expiration date. It doesn’t matter when you committed the crime. If you take a life in this community, we will use every resource to ensure you face justice.”
