Florida Executes Edward James for Gruesome Double Murder After Appeals Exhausted

Edward James, a 63-year-old man convicted of the brutal 1993 murders of an eight-year-old girl and her grandmother, was executed by lethal injection in Florida on Thursday. This execution followed the denial of multiple appeals by the U.S. Supreme Court.

James was pronounced dead at 8:15 p.m. at Florida State Prison, located near the city of Starke. Prior to his execution, he chose not to make a final statement, as reported by multiple news sources.

The Crimes and Sentencing

In a jury decision that was split 11-1, James received the death penalty after pleading guilty to the murders committed on September 19, 1993. He admitted to killing Toni Neuner, the young girl aged eight, and her grandmother, 58-year-old Betty Dick.

Toni Neuner suffered horrific injuries; she was raped and strangled. Her grandmother was not spared either, enduring 21 stab wounds. Following the murders, James stole jewelry and her car, fleeing to Bakersfield, California, where he was arrested on October 6, 1993.

Earlier this month, the Florida Supreme Court dismissed claims presented by James’ legal team that his history of substance abuse, combined with a heart attack earlier in 2023, resulted in a
