Florida Governor DeSantis Launches Evacuation Effort for 1,500 Jewish Americans Fleeing Violence in Israel
As violence intensifies in Israel amid its ongoing conflict with Iran, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is coordinating the evacuation of 1,500 stranded Americans. This targeted operation includes the deployment of four planes to transport those affected back home.
Evacuation Initiatives Begin
The Mano Maritime cruise ship Crown Iris played a crucial role in this operation by picking up the evacuees in Ashdod, Israel. The ship then embarked on a lengthy 13-hour journey to Lanarca, Cyprus. Most of the individuals onboard were participants in a program known as Birthright Israel, which offers educational trips to the Holy Land for young Americans with Jewish heritage.
Support from the Israeli Navy
During this time, Israeli airspace remains closed due to recent bombings from Iranian forces. Upon reaching Lanarca safely, the evacuees were under the protection of the Israeli navy. Gidi Mark, the CEO of Birthright Israel, reflected on the challenges faced during the operation. He stated that it was a significant and emotional task. Mark expressed pride that they managed to bring 1,500 young adults safely to Cyprus.
Florida’s Role in the Evacuation
Post-arrival in Cyprus, DeSantis, alongside the Florida Department of Emergency Management, volunteered the use of four wide-body planes to expedite the return of Jewish Americans to their homes. This response signifies Florida’s commitment to providing assistance during a critical time.
Local Efforts Amplify Statewide Initiatives
Further emphasizing the state’s dedication to evacuation efforts, Florida State Senator Jay Collins, a retired Green Beret, traveled to Israel earlier in the week. His purpose was to facilitate the return of thousands more Americans. Collins, a Republican and potential candidate for lieutenant governor in 2026, is associated with the Grey Bull Rescue Foundation. This organization is actively seeking to assist in the ongoing evacuation efforts.
Previous Evacuation Operations
Earlier in 2023, DeSantis had already organized plane evacuations for Americans following a brutal attack by Hamas on October 7. The governor noted the immediate need for state intervention, stating that the Biden administration was not adequately addressing the crisis.
Federal Response Critiques
In a previous interview with Fox News, DeSantis criticized the lack of federal support for citizens during the turmoil. He highlighted the contrast between the government’s response to illegal immigration and its approach toward American citizens stranded abroad. DeSantis expressed frustration that while the federal government facilitated flights for migrants across the country, similar attention was not given to evacuees in Israel.
Successful Return Flights
The governor’s previous operations had successfully evacuated at least 300 individuals from Tel Aviv. Upon their arrival at Tampa International Airport, they were greeted by DeSantis and the First Lady, Casey DeSantis, highlighting the state’s commitment to its residents.
Florida’s Jewish Population
Florida hosts the third-largest Jewish population in the United States, trailing only behind New York and California. Recent estimates suggest that around 650,000 Jewish Americans reside in the state, with significant communities found in cities like Miami Beach, Boca Raton, and Fort Lauderdale.
